Being a Pro in NHL 10

Yesterday I continued my end of Summer tradition and picked up the latest version of EA Sports Hockey franchise, NHL 10.  Since I so enjoyed last year’s ‘Be a Pro’ mode I thought I would once again kick off my NHL season  being a pro.  EA added a little twist to the mode this year by adding a prospects game.  This allowed you to place in the NHL draft and either better or worsen your position in said draft.  So after getting a goal and an assist in the prospects game I was drafted very early in the round and was picked up by the Columbus Blue Jackets.  The Columbus Blue Jackets?  They probably would have been the last team I would have picked for myself, but when you are in a draft you don’t have a choice where you go, so Columbus it is.

Last season when I started ‘Be a Pro’ I had to prove myself  in the minors before I could get to the show.  This season I was able to start the season with the big club and prove to the management that I had the chops to stay.  Three games into the season and I can say I am well on my way to being able to stay with the big club by scoring two goals in my first game and getting three assist in my next two games. Not bad start to my season.

Now not all is roses in NHL 10.  I am finding that the players fatigue, both in how they tire and how they recover is dramatically off from last season.  It seems that I could almost play the entire period without changing lines.  This kind of breaks the illusion of being part of the team.  Now I understand you want to be in the game as much as you can, but it still has to be balanced with giving your teammates ice time.  Now all is not lost, there is the ability to change the game settings, but as of yet I have not found the magic recipe.  I am going to give it a bit of time, but if I can’t find that happy setting I may have to move on to a Franchise/Season mode.  All in all the game seems pretty tight, if only the game stoppages moved along a little quicker the game would be nearly perfect.  More on NHL 10 as I get more ice time.

Canadians LOVE their hockey games. And when I say Love I mean I have heard countless arguments about "what is the best hockey game." NHL '94 for the SNES has always been the champ. That is, until NHL '09 came out. Then for the first time in many years my buddies were actually talking about a hockey game besides the revered NHL '94. So, that being said, I am very excited about this one.

And I am still waiting for that CFL video game Patrick!

What happened...Lance, your comment was at #2 before...
Demian Linn , September 18, 2009
@Demian - That is odd. That also happened on the video blips yesterday!

It likely happened because your NHL 94 for Genesis comment was full of so much hot air!!!!
Don't laugh, but I actually NEVER played the Genesis version of 94, only 93...

HA! I also got picked by the CBJ, but I didn't do to well, so I am now with the Syracuse Crunch. Even though I like the authentic mode, I decided to go with being on the ice all the time.

What do you think of the new board play feature? I like it and it makes dumping the puck in a better strategy, since the CPU doesn't always automatically pass up to the other blue line now.

Also, are you going to check out the online be-a-pro? I like it, but didn't find a steady club last year. If you know a team, or are looking to start one, let me know! My Xbox gamertag is same as name here with the space (George McBain).

Less than two weeks until NHL season begins!

@Lance: SNES may have been better at a lot of things than the Genesis, but it just could not hang when it came to EA Sports. NHL and Madden were just so much better on the big G. I am not sure why, that is a mystery you should look into

@Demian: If you want to play an opponent with moderate skill that can't score at will, send me a friend request. Just go to either of my links at the end of my post if you want my Gamertag.

@Patrick - I have been well educated on that matter by one of my brothers who said I was smoking too much crack, Demian, and now you - a fellow Canadian!!

But the SNES version had those cool little bugs like Bob Bassen! There was a glitch in the SNES version of NHL '94 that I had and Bob Bassen had a harder shot than Al Iafrate!!!

I understand the Genesis version was superior - after all the button scheme was obviously based off a Genesis pad - but my friends and I spent all of our time with the SNES version, so it has the memories.

@George Mc: The board feature is so new I usually forget about it. As for the online, I would like to get something going there. I will buzz you when I figure out what I am going to do. If you get something going before me, lemmie know.
