"hink that given a legitimate avenue, many people will not pirate. People who are determined to pirate will do so anyway, but those with disposable income and better things to do would probably just pay for their content. Itunes was the first system that allowed people to easily purchase music legally. People wanted digital music before that but the RIAA kept pushing CDs. As a result people were driven to piracy since there was no legal option. Sony pushing UMD is the equivalent of that."

"arding sony's demo, it was done under lab conditions. When they did the demo, they dimmed the lights, shut off the big screens and used a dark colored curtain behind the person the camera was focused on and they both wore light colored clothes. The contrast was to enable the camera to pick up the motions of the person and the wand. By their own admission it is nowhere near done. It's interesting technology, but as it is now, it probably wouldnt work at home.
Look:

The key distinction between sony, MS and Nintendo is Nintendo is shipping their 1:1 technology around next week. Sony and MS arent even done with theirs and need to get it out as quickly as they can."

"ven, I use the term scramble because 3 years later, MS and Sony are still showing tech demos. In Sony's case, very early tech demos, whereas nintendo has shipped one product and is already launching its second generation.
I dont know how you can say sony or MS have surpassed nintendo when the product hasn't been finished or launched and the public hasn't even used it. Sony's tech is quite dubious actually because they used a black screen and colored balls like a motion capture session. That is not real world conditions."

"ly 3D games also weren't very good. In fact, sony forced companies to release 3D games to highlight the differences in their platform. A lot of wii motion control seems tacked on in that way. However there have been some gems like boomblox. Wii Sports has truly been revolutionary for the industry it is the definition of a killer app. I doubt we would have seen MS and Sony release their motion control systems had it not been for the success of that game.

I am hopeful that the next batch of more accurate motion control games will be be things that we could never have experienced before. The first one that looks incredibly promising is Red Steel 2."

"hink it will be about as much a problem as divergent capabilities on consoles. We have a good example of that from the 80's and 90's with the NES vs Genesis, SNES vs Genesis, PS vs N64 . The games were made separately and rarely ported from one to another. I think the last generation and this one is the only one were we have seen any kind of trend towards multi platform.

The dominant control scheme will be the one with the greatest install base.

Oddly enough, I just wrote about something similar. See http://bitmob.com/index.php/mobfeed/In-the-end-Wii-was-the-real-next-gen.html

"has been MS's long term strategy to use the 360 as a trojan horse to move MS' influence from th desktop to the libving room. Prior projects like webtv and windows media center were still born, but the addition of hulu in addition to netflix might finally do it."

"re is a lot of circumstantial evidence pointing to this being true. MS and hulu definitely have some sort of business arrangement what is it, we wont know until june 8th"

"erstandable, the whole point is that portal took something in a genre that was pretty formulaic and turned it into something else entirely without changing the actual controls.

amusingly enough, many people actually think portal is an FPS because of the view and the "gun"
