Mobcast 88: Cheering at press events, lesser-known 2011 titles, video-game word association, and more

In this episode of the Mobcast, GamePro News Editor A.J. Glasser and freelancer Aaron Thomas join Bitmob's Dan Hsu and Brett Bates. The group discusses which lesser-known 2011 titles they think look interesting, why journalists shouldn't cheer at press events (based on an op-ed written by A.J.), and the pros and cons of duplicate panels at conventions. Also, Aaron presents the group with a round of video-game word association.

You guys have such a stellar group of writers/editors, how come you don't have more of them on the mobcasts regularly? Is it a geographic thing? It's so unbelievably easy to get anybody on with Skype, pretty much every podcast I've ever listened to records via it: PC Gamer, TWiT, etc, etc.

Just would like to see/hear a bit more diversity.

It's absolutely due to geography. We'd love to have the other guys and gals on staff on, but they live all across the country (and even Canada). We may experiment with Skype in the future, but there are logistical issues that make that difficult.

In the meantime, we'll try to make up with a diverse group of guests!

Oh man, if the Mobcast starts skyping, how Hsu read off Bates notes? :)

@Brett - I must admit I'm a little disappointed by your response. You are complaining about something that is essentially a solved problem. A quick Google search returns pages of results on how to do it, even using free software. It also shouldn't be that complicated to schedule a time that works for everybody... lots of other people manage that.

I used to participate in a weekly gaming podcast (game-central.org, only so you know I'm not making it up) were we literally had people in every US timezone and the person actually recording was in that great country to the north.

By not including all of the greatness of the mob/staff on your 'casts, it feels like you are missing what I take to be the spirit of the website. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to put down what you are currently doing, it just seems that there isn't an excuse strong enough to make such a closed podcast on such a community based site.

@Nick: I wasn't complaining. There are pros and cons to both ways of conducting a podcast. For us, the cons of Skyping overshadow the cons of local. But I understand your criticism, and we're always looking for ways to expand on what we're doing with podcasts. In fact, look for some community-based tweaks to the Mobcast in the near future.
