Goodbye Bitmob, hello GamesBeat

This should be the last front-page post on Bitmob.

I just emailed the Bitmob staff to tell them that we're shutting down activity over here and officially bringing it all over to GamesBeat -- we're finally live there with the new community tools that we've been working on all year.

It was a strange letter to write. I felt like I was saying goodbye in some small way, yet all we're doing is packing up and moving down the street. Most of the Bitmob staff are already actively writing over there. This was nearly a formality, announcing a change of scenery. So I didn't really say farewell to anyone -- more a "thanks for everything, now get back to work!"

I won't say goodbye to any Bitmob community members, either. My hope is that you'll follow us over to GamesBeat. We're doing the exact same thing there: mixing professionally produced articles with carefully curated and edited community content. Except on GamesBeat, you'll have a much, much, much larger audience to write for and many more seasoned writers to be published next to.

Are you in? Here's what you need to do:

Head over to GamesBeat and hit the "log in" button in the red bar up top. Then register a new account but use your current Bitmob username. This will ensure that, later, when we finish the full migration, we can merge your old Bitmob stories into your new GamesBeat profile. Until then (timing is TBD), the two accounts will be separate.

So don't worry. Your current Bitmob stories are still live and around, and we'll eventually connect them to your new GamesBeat page, so they will all live in one place.

(NOTE: If you have any current, outstanding stories that are still in draft mode, you will have to re-create them on GamesBeat. We don't have any method to move them over. If you wrote a story to the Mobfeed within the last two weeks that hasn't been pushed to the front page of Bitmob, you're welcome to resubmit them as a new post on GamesBeat.)

The new GamesBeat is only in beta. It's been tough getting Bitmob to work over there, and we're not completely done yet. Over the next few weeks, we'll be fixing any problems that pop up, plus adding new features and working on that final and full migration. But all our testing shows the system works just fine -- and in several ways, it's even better than ever (we have much more control over spam stories, for example). We have much more planned, so we hope you'll stick with us.

If you have any general questions, feel free to comment here. I'll check back regularly and answer what I can. If you have any technical issues or bugs to report, please let us know at webmaster@venturebeat.com.

Thanks for all your support over the last three years. We'll see you on the other side.

P.S. Special thanks to co-founders Demian Linn and Rich McGrath. Bitmob wouldn't have happened without their hard work.

I'll be moving my account over shortly! Maybe I'll actually...you know...write something again soon!

Very cool. Congrats! Now let's talk money...

How do I migrate my adsense over? I noticed there's a slot ID and an Adsense ID. Which numbers do I put where? Is slot ID the actual ad, and Adsense ID the pub number?

Hey Danny, I personally don't know because I don't use it (I was banned for asking my readers on my old Sore Thumbs blog to click on them). Do these instructions help? If not, let me know!

Done.

Sad to see BitMob go. I loved the community feel here. Hope that it translates over to GamesBeat...

I hope so, too. If not, help me! You can always give me direct feedback. Easiest way to reach me is via @danshoehsu on Twitter. :)

Btw, I meant "done" as in I ported my account over to GamesBeat, not "done" as in done with you guys. Just in case that wasn't clear...

I look forward to this new and exciting move. Hopefully the move will inspire people (myself included ) to write more for the site.  I have met some great people here on Bitmob and look forward to continuing  the trend on Gamesbeat!

Best of luck on the new format.  Bitmob was a great concept.  Let's see a strong evolution :)

I didn't write from day one, but I've always been around Shoe and Linn's project. I may not have the dream job from it (yet) that I thought it would help me obtain, but it's been very helpful, frustrating (in an OK way), fun, and beneficial. I really enjoy the people I've met and stayed in touch with via Twitter and Facebook -- especially Shums, Samir, and Shoe.

I'll be over at GamesBeat to keep on writing, but it will be harder with a new focus on freelancing developing, and some other doors that have possibly opened thanks to Bitmob.

I know you get this a lot, Shoe, but you and EGM are the reasons I do what I do, earned a college degree, and all that jazz.

Thank you.

(For Samir)

Bitmob kickstarted my career in video games and introduced me to good nerd friends like Shoe, Demian, and the rest of the Bitmob crew. So while I'm sad to see the name go, I'm really happy the spirit is living on over at GamesBeat. Here's to growing this already awesome community over there!

I've been a reader since day 1 and only started commenting when I just couldn't take the reality of not interacting with the amazing community anymore. I only wrote three things for you guys but I've had some of the best times online here at Bitmob. I love the community and the myriad of friends it has afforded me. Sad to see the name go. I will keep it in my heart, always.

Great run Shoe! I remember when it was just the two of you putting this thing together with your bare hands. :) I created a GamesBeat account. Hopefully my stuff transfers over. Even though my contributions are ancient, I still utilize my Bitmob account and the few articles I've written.

Good luck with this new transition! Keep moving forward my man. :)

Question: are you going to move our articles over to GamesBeat eventually? I realize that that entire task is daunting, so I was just wondering if you were planning such a migration anyhow.

I love all the new features of GamesBeat. And I finally get to see actual game news, not just features. Yay. Now we just have to pitch in our own content.

I may need some time to get used to the new format. Phew.

December 13, 2012

We're definitely planning that, yes. But I don't know when it'll happen! As long as you have claimed your same username on GamesBeat (as the one you're using on Bitmob), we'll link them up at some point and bring your stories over to your new profile. :)

Anyone else having problems with the new site? Can't do anything with it. Locks up instantly. Tried on iPhone 5, iPad 2, two PC's, one Mac and my Kindle Fire. Site just freezes as soon as I click on it and has been doing it for about 4 hours now. I want to get all my stuff over there asap so I can feel better about it! Ah! If technology were a person I'd shake my fist at it right about now.

Hey Ed, are you talking about just accessing http://venturebeat.com/gamesbeat, period? Or are you trying to do something specific there and registering, posting a story, etc? Can you be as specific as possible and let me know what you're seeing and when? (because GamesBeat loads just fine for me and we haven't had any other complaints there)

100media_imag0065
December 13, 2012

Sorry, should have bee more specific. I was talking about just loading the site from the link in this article and loading the front page. The page locks up at worst, and runs extremely slowly at best. I managed to sign up/in, but it took me a while (10 mins to load sign-in page). Maybe a lot of traffic? Don't know. I turned off all Blockers, still no change. Odd how this is happening with every device I try, but nobody else having this problem.

It must be something on my end then. It's odd though, considering I pretty much signed away the soul of my first born child to get the fastest speed Verizon Fios offers. I've never encountered something like this, but again, if nobody is experiencing it clearly it's on my end.

Sorry Ed, I think it's on your end. No one's experiencing any issues but you. Wish we could figure out why!

Well Ladies & Gents, looks like it's time to pack it up and shut off the lights. I'm certainly going to miss this place, but I'm looking forward to whats in store for all of us in the new digs.

To Shoe & Co - Bitmob has been a great experiment that I hope has paid off for you guys as much as it has for us. Bitmob excelled as a place I knew I could post content safe from forum trolls and other internet meat heads.

Raise your glasses my friends, this round is on me!

I am now an esteemed member of the GamesBeat community! It's been awesome seeing this site grow out of sorethumbs and now on its way to venturebeat. Maybe one of these days I'll actually get around to writing some more stuff! It's been a great oppurtunity to connect with other gamers and to meet some of the journalists that I've looked up to for a very long time. I look forward that continuing over at VentureBeat. High fives!

Bitmob will always hold a special place in my heart as my first foray into writing about games and my first meetings with industry luminaries whose works I grew up reading. The passion and dedication exhibited by this community is both exhilirating and wonderful to behold, and I'm so happy to see GamesBeat flourish from such talented writers and awesome content. Congratulations to everyone!

If I write a post for GB, it won't mess up my Bitmob profile migration, will it?

Shoe_headshot_-_square
December 16, 2012

No sir! If you are using the same username there, we will eventually merge the two, and both sets of stories will appear under the same GB profile.

Default_picture
December 28, 2012

Does GB work the same as Bitmob? What I mean by that is you will have your front page articles that get promoted and then all the others trickling into a feed? Or will it all get directed to one page?

Shoe_headshot_-_square
December 29, 2012

Yup! Our Mobfeed is "GB Unfiltered" over there. Then we will promote the best articles to the main GamesBeat page. Exactly the same as here, except with some better features here and there (and some missing ones we'll be adding in as time goes on). :)

Although I've only been with Bitmob for 5ish months I have thoroughly enjoyed the sense of community on the site and have just made the move over to GamesBeat.

Just to be clear, I don't need to repost any front page Bitmob articles over on my GB profile do I? Also, any progress report on how the migration is going?

Happy New Year everyone!

Shoe_headshot_-_square
January 02, 2013

You don't need to repost any stories, no. We're not allowing that, so we don't have all this duplicate content. Migration: Still a work in progress that was delayed by the holidays. :(  They're working on it! Thanks for your patience.
