Dancing is great cardiovascular exercise, so it makes sense that Dance Central 2 features a calorie-burning counter. While the original Dance Central had a Workout Mode, the sequel’s fitness concept is more defined, and you can sweat with a friend in co-op.
Fitness Mode mixes tracks from Dance Central 2’s 40+ song library (70+ if you import the first game’s soundtrack) and groups them by difficulty or length. The “Warmup” playlist lasts 20 minutes, while “The Long Haul” tests your heart for almost 50 minutes.
I’m trying to take better care of myself, so I gave Fitness Mode a try. I went with “Cardio Groove” on medium difficulty, which consists of five songs that last about 12 minutes total. Don’t judge me!
Here’s how it went down:
1. I Like It (Enrique Iglesias ft. Pitbull)
Stars: 5
Points: 1,745,038
This song is fairly easy, but watch out for a move called “Concert Jump” that requires you to -- you guessed it -- jump up and down. My favorite move is called “T.D.O.E. Scratch” because it makes you feel like a DJ working the turntables.
2. Sexy Bitch Chick (David Guetta ft. Akon)
Stars: 4
Points: 1,184,149
Sexy Chick is a bitch. It has countless dance moves to keep track of. In the end, I made up my own routine, and I didn't even look at the TV screen. It’s a miracle I got 4 stars.
3. Technologic (Daft Punk)
Stars: 5
Points: 1,496,136
Harmonix got really cruel with Technologic. This song is clearly intended for masochistic robots. You go from a slow and sexy move called “Wave Lean” to the heart attack-inducing “Jump Around,” where you bounce from side to side while flapping your arms like a coked-up albatross.
4. Yeah! (Usher ft. Lil' Jon & Ludacris)
Stars: 5
Points: 925,144
After the madness of Technologic, Yeah! seems like child’s play. Its slower pace let me lower my heart rate so I could keep breathing and playing.
5. Baby Got Back (Mix Mix) (Sir Mix-a-Lot)
Stars: 5
Points: 2,047,153
By this time, I’d become a dance god, albeit a tired and sweaty deity. Sir Mix-a-Lot’s timeless song about asses has no rump-shaking moves, but I wiggled my booty during freestyle mode for some extra fat-burning.
A single Twinkie has 150 calories, and according to Dance Central 2, I burned 65 calories in 12:21. For every Hostess snack cake I devour, I need to dance for at least half an hour or face a terrible guilt trip.
Mmm...Twinkies....
