Don't Get Any Ideas Sony: PS4 Concept

Last week we showed you Tai Chiem's space age concept for the Xbox 720. Well, he's back, this time with his fragile-looking take on the PlayStation 4. Be careful viewing -- ya might break it [via Geekologie]:

Looks pretty cool. Uh, except for that all-knowing eye. We're already paranoid about ceiling cats, so the last thing we need to worry about is our gaming consoles watching us play with our newfangled joysticks.

The glass acting as a screen is pretty cool. However, I don't think it's a good idea, especially on the controller. Imagine having your hands covered with broken pieces of glass after banging your controller out of frustration while playing a game.

It looks sexy now, but imagine what it will look like in the room of a nerd...covered in greases fingerprints, sticky soda. This is the type of thing that would need a lot of maintenance in order to keep it looking sexy.

ill take the new ps4...and a bottle of windex. That oughta do the it

The glass/screen part is an interesting idea, but would people actually be able to use it? I think that many people put their gaming systems in an A/V rack, so how would one make use of the screen without completely redesigning one's living room?

Also, Aaron, that is possibly the most ugly portable gaming system I've ever seen. Who designed that? Fischer Price?

Normally, first couple drafts for product like this are amazingly pretty. But it gets uglier as different departments within the company have their go at it.

Engineers tell you they need space for heat-sink, Power source, vent. And they will curse you out if any shape in the design doc that is not square or a perfect circle.

Accounting will tell you nothing but the cheapest, foulest looking, un-recyclable plastic is acceptable. And if you blow them off. They will audit your ass and make you justify every design choice base on dollar value.

Then some mid-level manager will bring in some color expert. Telling you that, the color palettes you pick might offend somebody. And if you made something pure black or white then it is visually unappealing.

At the end the upper management will tell you that the company logo is not big enough. Or ask you why the product’s name is not on the product. Or they’ve made a strategic deal with other companies, so you need to make some changes to accompany their needs. Company x will want you to make the product their company color. While Company y would make other own obnoxious demands.

If you are lucky, it would be a black or white looking box. But most of the time you will end up with a gray or depressing looking crap with blinking lights.

Chen is a graphic designer who makes generic looking instruction manuals, and is dating a product designer who makes generic looking gadgets.

The dude can make some beautiful renderings but both concepts are some of the least functional designs I've ever seen... would like to see some addl. renders using some of the same aesthetics but with real-world considerations.
