An attempt to dip a toe into my disgracefully large pool of impulsive game purchases goes... swimmingly.

Journey is not just about getting to the end. It's also about who you meet along the way.

One of my all-time favorite games is free to play this weekend. Give it a try!

An average fighting game player's perspective...

Despite being passed over by many gamers during the fall 2011 AAA dogpile, PAYDAY: The Heist is tremendously good fun and deserves a second look.

Apart from showing us some pretty cutscenes, what does the new Resident Evil 6 trailer reveal about the coming game? Some reflection and maybe a little cynicism to follow...

"I think 2 and 5 are often hard for companies to find a balance in carrying out effectively. When done right, they can string fans along for months, when done badly, they just intensely piss everyone off. Nice points."

"Thanks very much! I think it was from a recent Kotaku story that someone in the comments quoted a friend in regards to Journey as saying something like, "I have never cared more about a total stranger in a game than when I played this." That pretty well encapsulates it for me. The communication is so simple, but very primal and easy to understand. It wasn't until a recent playthrough that I realized there's a little bit of snow at the end that you can leave message trails in. Great, great game."

"I was referring more to GOTY editions (i.e. with all DLC on the disc), but your point is still valid."

"The more time passes, the less willing I am to buy games at launch. Why pay $70-$90 for something I can probably get for $40 in a year or less? It's not like there aren't a ton of games on my backlog or something good for under $10 on Steam or Amazon most days."

"On sale for $5 this week on Amazon. I'd highly recommend grabbing it."

"I list these with the brief comment that sexy doesn't necessarily equal sexist. In no way do these negate the demeaning portrayals of women, but I don't think it's honest to say that gaming is strictly a boy's club these day.

"I see where you're coming from, but seriously man, you're talking about a nine-year-old game. There's comes a time to let go. Who are you playing SC2 with anyway?"

"I guess something I've found extremely frustrating is the 3-moves players you frequently encounter online, by which I mean, they seem to know only three (or less) moves which they spam over and over. It's even more infuriating when they are extremely good at blocking and then proceed to spam you to death. I encountered an Aeon player the other day who beat me something like 6 times using mostly blocking and A, A, A every match.

I actually do make an effort to try the more active blocking, but it never seems to work as well as just holding it down and waiting for a hit sequence to end.

It wouldn't be copying to do a hardcore review, and as you said, it's always good to see opposing or at least differing perspectives. Thanks for the rea"

"You're suffering cognitive dissonance over killing imaginary cops? Really? Your soul is "unclean" because you played GTA? If you're having this much trouble separating reality from fantasy, maybe video games aren't for you. You're mistaking your capacity to write a bunch of words and reference various media for being thoughtful.

Yes, I'm being super harsh, but goddamn, this article is insufferable in its naked desire to inspire childish hand-wringing over a very straightforward video game. You know why you kill a lot of cops in Payday? Because 1) it wouldn't be very fun to experience what cops would actually do, which is sit outside a building for eight hours trying to talk the criminals down and 2) the familiar dynamic of cops and robbers makes for an easy framework upon which to build an objective-based shooter."

""Square Enix, why are you releasing a sequel to a game that was generally resented by even Final Fantasy’s most hardcore fans?"

They had a bunch of unused art assets after making FFXIII and are forced to use them now because

1) they're struggling as a company and haven't been planning things very well either creatively or financially,
2) they somehow seem to think that resting the future of their company on Tetsuya Nomura's shoulders is still a good idea.
3) It's cheaper than creating a new IP from scratch, even if the old IP is kind of reviled.

It feels like Square-Enix has forgotten that without a good story and characters, a bunch of pretty graphics are just window dressing over a severely antiquated battle system. I sincerely think Square-Enix is in real trouble."

""In Character Designer Tetsuya Nomura's world everyone is prettier than you."

Also, covered in belts and utterly devoid of testosterone."
