EDITOR'S NOTEfrom Demian Linn

We featured Samir's post in our last Spotlight, but I think it deserves a place on the front page, especially considering the conversation going on in the comments.

Video-game visuals have come a long way -- from blocky pixels to smooth polygons. Everyone enjoys today’s realistic game characters and 3D environments, but there will always be a place in my heart for the simple blocks meshed together to form basic 2D shapes that made our imaginations run wild. Let’s take a look at the magical makeovers of 10 beloved game characters....

Nice. I think some of these looked better in pixels, haha!

I think moving to polygons was the right way to go for most game genres, but retro pixels should never be abandoned. Imagine a brand new Metroid with the 2D visuals of The King of Fighters XIII.

Oh, no doubt! But I don't think Tails, for example, translated well, haha!

Spiderman made me lol the hardest.  Although pixels can be large or small, there's a level of charm and detail that you can only get with pixels.  Just like you said to Mr. Villarreal, we should never abandon 2D pixels; it's like saying we should abandon the outdated art of painting to focus strictly on sculpture.

Yes! Thank you for putting that into words for me, haha!

Beautiful analogy. You probably haven’t played Shadow Complex -- it’s basically Super Metroid with polygons. It’s great, but I would love it just as much if it was 2D, and maybe more because of nostalgia. Some of the best games of all time were in pixelated 2D glory.

Great read. Man, back in 84 when I was playing the Atari 2600, I remember thinking it couldn't possibly get any better than this. Then the NES came out, and I was blown away. Again I thought it couldn't get any better than this. I kept thinking that through the SNES, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and PS3. It is only with this new generation that I can finally see how it could get better, lol.

I went through that it-can’t-possibly-get-any-better-than-this moment when I saw Altered Beast for the first time at a pizzeria, then again with the first Virtua Fighter. Games like Uncharted and Gears of War are visually impressive, but there haven’t been any new “oh shit!” moments in years.

That's for sure. Even playing games like Metro 2033 maxed on my PC can't give me that same feeling as seeing Goldeneye for the first time, or Gears of War/Uncharted.

Great retrospective, and the comments so far are an excellent addendum.

Thank you! Hey, here’s a game I’m grateful it never went 3D. It shouldn’t even be in 2D. It shouldn’t even be a game, period. Know what it is?

I was going to say that I'm ashamed that I don't, but I'm thinking that I should be grateful about that fact instead.

You actually get bonus points for not knowing! That screenshot is from The Great Waldo Search for the NES. Let’s never talk about this again…

I've still never had a game make me laugh as hard as the first two Space Quest games!  This comment is largely superfluous, I know... but we're all just proving the same point here, right!?!  Team work!

I admit I don’t know much about Space Quest, but if you told me it was a video game adaptation of Big Trouble in Little China, I’d believe it.

Hahaha, I loved the Spiderman one. Also, I never really realized there was an arcade version of Bionic Commando. I thought it started on the NES.

Atari Spider-Man looks like Frogger after being squashed by a truck.

The 8-bit era was flooded with arcade ports, but others, like Bionic Commando and Ninja Gaiden got completely original games within the same universe as their arcade cousins.

Ryu still makes the same dumb-ass face after all these years... has his training taught him nothing?!

I think that’s how he charges his ki, through ridiculous facial expressions. That makes Dan Hibiki the most powerful world warrior of all.
