Assassin's Creed is one of the most successful games of the current generation. It has lived through 3 sequels and has yet to even show signs of smothering out. The franchise has diminished everything you once thought was epic; or even anything you never dreamt could happen in a game! With all that said, would you really like to see a movie adaption of this franchise?
Most video games ported over to Hollywood ultimately blow up to pieces when they hit the big screens. They fail to capture what was done in the actual game. Either through poor acting, visuals, or story, they never tend to engross an audience of any sort.
I personally think video games are meant to stay as games. That’s what they're built to be, not movie. Video games are two entirely different territories. They shouldn't be fiddled with! No one can recreate the same feeling you can achieve while playing a game. A better way to maybe put it would be games are meant to put you in the action, or story. Movies on the other hand are only food for the eyes. Instead of interacting within the story and choosing yourself how it ultimately pans out, it is chosen for you. You watch everything play out.
On that note, would we really like to see one of our favorite video game icons go down in ruin because of a Hollywood mishap? Can they really create the massive experience we'd come to love in Assassin's creed? The story alone takes hours upon hours to complete and that isn't just what the game is about.
Well I have both good and bad news that will either satisfy or displease whichever side those of you may stand on. In a recent report, Sony Pictures is working on a deal with Ubisoft that would secure them the rights to the movie. However, the deal is very lenient to Ubisoft, giving them almost total control over the entire project! The deal even gives them the power to overview the budget, cast, script, and even release date. "As a director, even Steven Spielberg cannot get this kind of deal," Vulture was told by an "insider" which is funny saying he is one of the most highly praised movie directors in history.
If this deal goes through, the movie could either way. The upside being we have the actual game developers supervising the project. They'd create the movie how they'd think it should be. We'd get the best guy for either Altair or Ezio, not some Hollywood playgirl brought in because of fame and looks. We'd also get to see the story the way we should see it, that being if Ubisoft can successfully port the project.
The downside to all of this is simply because Ubisoft has too much control. Ironic? They'd have the power to shut down the project at any given time, whether it is in, before, or even after production. They could even simply say they never want the game ported into a movie. Essentially we'd never see the game reach the big screen.
I don't want to sound hypocritical of my own opinion, but if this deal went through, I'd be happy to see the game turned into a movie. Why? The very same game developer would be making it, not Hollywood. Who knows, maybe the Mario Bros. movie could have been the complete opposite of a disaster if the games devs made it. It would just all fall down to whether or not Ubisoft can make a movie worth seeing.
What are your thoughts? Would you like to see an Assassin's Creed movie? What if the game's developers had control of the entire project instead of Hollywood?
