Are You Addicted to Video Games?

Gelled hair, a sly smirk, a pierced ear, and a pair of sweaty palms -- this is the face of addiction. At least, that's what this poster, prepared by Alloy Media, would have you believe.

Estoye, a frequent Redditor, spotted this awareness ad in a hallway at his high school. Judging by the comments left by others, these posters are cropping up across the country. The message is simple: If you have the slightest interest in video games, then you're at risk of addiction. Quit cold turkey before it devours your life!

The pseudoscientific symptoms listed by Alloy's inarticulate poster are what irritate me the most. The advertisement suggests that if you think or talk about games while you're not playing them, then you probably suffer from addiction. Wow, what a claim!

Alloy also suggests that we trade in our video games for classic board games, stating "real games can be just as much fun."

I'll let you guys point out this poster's stupidity in the comments section. Go wild!

I appreciate your sentiments towards the tone of the poster, but really, aside from the sign of talking or thinking about games, I'd say that any one who can apply some of those other signs does in fact have a problem. Anyone who lets any activity consistently get in the way of their relationships, responsibilities, and personal hygiene/health, needs to reconsider their commitment to said activity.

But you're right. The poster definitely suggests that any amount of gaming beyond using it to kill some time between hanging out at Starbucks and going to school is addiction, and that's simply ridiculous.

Wait a minute. They were thinking about games while making this poster. Obviously they weren't playing games while designing the poster at the same time..........Now hold on a second.......if you add those two things together......multiply by 7 and subtract the idiocy.........DEAR GOD!! They're Video Game Addicts!!!!!!!!!!

Oh man, this sucks. I think about Video Games quite often throughout the day. I think about how much fun they are. I think about the amazing gaming experiences I have had in over 20 years. I think about the friends I have made, and the experiences I have shared with them. I think about upcoming games, and games I am currently playing. I think about how playing games for a few hours a day relieves stress, and improves my focus. All this time I thought that games were improving me as a person, but now I realize I am an addict.

I should have known games were up to no good. I knew something was off. I was playing Metro 2033 and one day, while out with friends, we started talking about how good it was. I should have known at that moment that something wasn't right. Why were we talking about the game?? We weren't directly in front of the game. We weren't currently playing it. Yet we were talking about it. This would have been fine if we were talking about a board game, or a movie, or a book, or a good song, or the weather, or sexually curious unicorns, but not video games.

Where can I go to get help???? Can I even quit them??? Will Monopoly be a good substitute for Battlefield Bad Company 2??? Can I overcome this monstrous addiction!?!?!? Can someone please direct me to the bathroom, I have an itch and I want to make sure I'm not having a flare-up.

Awareness is good, but this is stupid. Personally, I'm sending them a comment at http://www.alloymarketing.com/contact/

Btw, I don't know about you guys, but when I think about video game addicts, rarely do they smile. At least not the way this kid does. It's ridiculous, they really don't know what and who they are dealing with :(

An admirable resolve, but a terrible plan.

I will be talking about the following poster you guys have:
http://i.imgur.com/scbXq.jpg

While I think this it is an admirable goal to stop video game addiction, this ad simply gets it all wrong. For one, it states that thinking about video games when you aren't playing means that you are addicted. If I were to think about basketball right now, does that mean that I am addicted to basketball?

What makes a board game better than video games? The only benefit of board games are that they are less fun, and therefore less addictive.

No one, not ONE addict looks like that. In fact, I have never seen a serious video game player look anything like the person you have on your ad. First of all, he is smiling. When all your energy and concentration is invested in the screen in front of you, you are not smiling. You have your brow furrowed, eyes staring carefully at the screen. Imagine an addict sitting there, smiling for 10 hours on end. It's ridiculous. Just as a general rule, gamers don't gel their hair in some guido manner either. The point is, the people who are most liable to become addicted will look at this poster and walk on. Why? The gamer cannot relate to this person, because the person in the picture, no matter how you look at it, is a douchebag. Gamers will look at the picture, and read your tips, and just KNOW that you know nothing about them. Sure you want to help, but how much do you actually know? How much do you know about these people, except for the raw facts and statistics?

Overall, my point is that a poster like this will only turn people aside. As it looks ridiculous to me, it will look ridiculous to them. It's like having a picture with Hitler on it meant to teach people not to steal.

Gamers like Brown, Blue, Green and Grey. Using Yellow makes it look like some stupid McDonald's ad.

I think about games all the time, but I never actually sit down and play them. Indeed, my play time is erratic and random. I don't understand the quip about board games when a session of the most popular games can take hours. I don't understand how video games are any less "real".

I have to admit though, I've never really had a problem with any sort of addiction. The closest I've been to being addicted was while speedrunning MGS4.

Woohoo! I'm not addicted to video games.

I mean, I was a few months ago, but I'm not NOW. I guess I got bored of being addicted, so I took a break. Frankly, I'm just too poor to be addicted right now.

Hey, I bet that's how HEROIN works!

If you think about heroin, you're addicted to it -- regardless of whether you've ever taken it or not! That's a fact!

Personally, I think posters like this are great.  Because of these school posters, I developed a fondness for peas, broccoli, and reading.

Carry on, fine folks at Alloy Marketing!
