Bitmob Late Night: A Trio of Thoughts

A few thoughts on E3, Rockstar's latest, and Punch-Out!! as I browse Bitmob while prepping a bigger story for tomorrow:

  1. I can't wait for E3: A lot of people in the gaming press will tell you they dread this conference. They already know everything that's being shown, they have to work nonstop, it smells bad, and their poor feet hurt. All valid points, sure. But due to the setup at EGM/1UP the past few years, I haven't gone to the past couple E3s (I was helping run the "home team") -- and I kinda miss it. It is a spectacle, it is important to the industry, and I'm sure I'll see a lot of things I didn't know were coming. In other words: Bring it on.
  2. When news broke about GTA4: The Ballad of Gay Tony, I was all ready to write a quick piece on it. Then Shoe was all like, "Guys, I'm gonna write up a story about this." The nerve. Anyway, he has a FAB-u-LOUS write-up here, and I have a few more thoughts on the subject.

Though I'm not certain on all the details, I remember listening to a recent episode of Rebel FM, and the guys read a letter asking about when they thought a company would release a major game featuring a gay lead. My thoughts immediately went to Rockstar, and that's one of the conclusions they had on the podcast as well. I believe they even said a GTA4 downloadable episode would be perfect for it. And here we go. Nice call, guys.

And good by Rockstar, one of the few developers that would have the balls to do something like this. They'll get a lot of flack for it, inevitably, but they don't let that stop them from moving forward. Some may argue they're doing it just for the attention; I'd say they're making the games they want to make, as the quality of most of their controversial games attest (see: Bully, Grand Theft Auto 4; don't see: Manhunt 2). Regardless, I'm looking forward to this one...and it reminds me that I still have to finish The Lost & Damned!
  3. Punch-Out!!: Boy, did I get screwed on this one. I got a sweet deal on Amazon for the game ($40), and to keep the sweetness flowing, I went for the free-shipping option. Of course, that pushed the ship day way back, meaning I'm still waiting for the game while everyone else is blogging like mad about it. Bleh. I just want to play the game already. I feel like I'm the only one not invited to the party!

I am pumped for E3! Getting snacks and sitting on the couch for the conferences.

One of my life-long goals is to someday cover E3. Sigh... If anyone has the patience to sit through industry numbers, its me.

We probably shouldn't tell you, then, about the Punch-Out party the Bitmob community's throwing...only for those who've played the game, though.

Haha. This is the second time you screwed me over today, Shoe!

The Ballad of Gay Tony? This could be pulled off well, however, I fear the worst.

I'm going to wait for the trailer before getting excited about The Ballad of Gay Tony, I think it's great, and pretty brave of Rockstar to be making a game with a gay character as the focal point, however they have a pretty terrible track record of treating gays with any kind of respect.

Greg, you need to sign up for Amazon prime. Depending on your sales tax it tends to pay for itself over a year's time. Got my copy of Punch Out a day after release, and got InFamous yesterday (on release day). Plus if you sign up for ECA membership ($20) you can save another 10% off any game purchase for a year. I know it is a $100 investment for both, but if it saves you $200 over a years time it is worth it.

I'd still be interested in a woman lead, unfortunately I don't think GTA ever presents women as anything more than crazy, backstabbing, or annoying(occasionally dead.) Seeing as that's the case, I don't see how they could make a female a lead in anything in their current universe. Maybe next round Rockstar, but Gay Tony is a step in the right direction. The only downside to taking one of these characters and putting them into their own story is that it automcatically makes them a patheological murderer and that can limit the choices. Oh another step in the right direction, giving these DLCs to PS3 owners. Praise to Bethesda for taking a step in the right direction, timed exclusives I can like with, permanent exclusives rub me all the wrong ways.

Interesting, Dustin. Amazon Prime has always tempted me from the sidelines. Thing is, I don't order quite enough over the course of a year to guarantee it's worth it (there's a Best Buy within four blocks of my place that I do most of my game shopping at).

To your point Chris: I think anyone Rockstar puts in a lead role, be it a woman or Gay Tony in this case, they will make sure they are fully developed, strong characters that will make us care about them (think Nikki and Paulo on Lost). The point about being a pathological murderer...well, it's hard to argue that. Even if they want your character to show incredible remorse over killing someone, how do they handle the situation of when you run over a few pedestrians just for the hell of it?

I think they could do a female character. The easiest way I could see it working is if she played the "straight man" role amidst all the usual dick and fart humor the games are full of. Tons of movies and TV shows have bad ass female characters that work. The whole dating system in the game would a little weird though as I can't see myself trying to get laid by some random guys. Now that I think about it Rockstar could add some girl/girl action and end up on the news again... so maybe it will happen if they do another episode.
