I've always been suspicious of that lake at the top of Dinosaur Land in Super Mario World. How did that water get all the way up there? Turns out it flows from the floating Kingdom of Zeal from Chrono Trigger [Press The Buttons via Geekologie]:

Hard to believe those games were both on the same system. The sprite detail in Chrono Trigger looks next gen compared to SMW.

@Michael: Just a little evidence for the graphically expressive range of 16-bit, and 2D. I think there's a tendency to forget that there's something besides photorealism or scifi-realism or other -realism in graphic design, especially as graphics get more powerful and games try to be more cinematic. In 3D, at least platformers and games like Brutal Legend and Borderlands still pop up now and then from bigger studios that have cartoony/stylized graphical presentation, although I can't think of any non-graphically realistic game that is known for pushing the hardware that doesn't involve graphics. What I'm curious about is if the waterfall and lake actually line up with no adjustment left or right.

Chrono Trigger is my favorite game ever and to see it put together with one of the greatest mario games, well...it's amazing and i love it.
