From movies to pixels: 10 film characters invade video games

The film and video-game industries make billions of dollars each year, so making games about movies (and vice versa) is a natural and logical tie-in. Sadly, the combination of my two favorite hobbies usually ends in embarrassing failure.

Regardless, it's fun to take a look back at some classic characters that graced the silver screen in the '70s and '80s and see how they look as 2D sprites.

Notice that R-rated flicks spawned most of the following titles (targeted at kids). Just how the hell did Jaws get away with a PG rating? Anyway, on with the show....

Ellen Ripley

Aliens (1986) Aliens (arcade, 1990)

RoboCop (1987) RoboCop (arcade, 1988)

Predator (1987) Alien vs. Predator (arcade, 1994)

Die Hard (1988) Die Hard (NES, 1991)

Alien (1979) Alien 3 (SNES, 1993)

Jaws (1975) Jaws (NES, 1987)

Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982) Friday the 13th (NES, 1989)

Predator (1987) Predator 2 (Genesis, 1991)

Rambo: First Blood Part 2 (1985) Rambo: First Blood Part 2 (Master System, 1986)

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Genesis, 1993)

The PG-13 rating didn't exist when Jaws was released, and I guess there wasn't enough R-rated stuff in Jaws. I think another Spielberg movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, was what led to the rating's creation. But yeah - companies didn't care about selling this kinds of things to kids if the characters were marketable. It looks like Alan Schaefer got an upgrade between his movie and game.

Jaws scared the crap out of me as a child, and I still thinks it's pretty gory. I had a much easier time dealing with Temple of Doom's Kano fatality and the decapitation scene from The Last Crusade.

Dutch's arm enhancement may be the beta version of Jax's.

Is Alien vs. Predator the Capcom-designed one with Lin Kurasawa? It gave me a "Bionic Commando" vibe.

Yes. Kurosawa kicked major ass in that game, literally. I'd love to see her in a Capcom "vs." game.

She gets a surprising amount of fan requests considering she's only been in that game and Capcom doesn't own the license to AVP. Would her pseudo-replacement Simone from Cannon Spike be OK?

Lt. Kurosawa is not pleased with your suggestion.

What about the True Lies game?

Oh, I have plenty of material for a follow-up story. :)

Is it wrong that I had to stare at the Die Hard screen shot for about 10 seconds before I realized it was a top-down view?

I'm surprised it only took you 10 seconds.

I thought the newer Jaws games were funnier. I still have no idea why Jaws is killing so many people in random places. Lol.

Jaws enjoys human flesh as much as we enjoy shark nuggets.

Why wasn't this a Puzzler? I would have actually done well on that one. :)

Guess the movie/game villain.

Isn't that picture from the Friday the 13th remake? Jason (at least, the adult, unstoppable killer version) wasn't even in the original movie, and I don't think he started wearing the hockey mask until at least the third.

Ah...you're right! It's hard to think about Jason without his trademark hockey mask. Thanks for the correction.

And yeah, that image of him is from the remake, but I really like it (the pic, not the remake).

It's easy to overlook Jason not being the killer in the first movie, seeing as he was in every other movie in the franchise.

I'll agree that's a good picture. However, while I'll admit this may be splitting hairs, it seems to me a contemporary picture would better serve the purpose of the article. That is, a picture of 80's Jason would be a better comparison, since it's what the creators of the game were trying to reproduce. Of course, the new design is fairly faithful to the old one, hence why it may be splitting hairs.

I agree. I searched the web for a good Jason photo from the '80s but I couldn't find one that I liked. Norrowing the search down to "part 3" helped. Thanks again!

That picture of Jaws brought back some gruesome NES memories. I remember having to aim the boat to stab the shark which was one of the most bizarre boss battles I've been in. Fit the movie, though!

Cliffhanger for the Genesis. My uncle stole that game from me just a few days after I got it. Not sure I ever got it back. Not actually sure why I got it in the first place.

Could Cliffhanger be the only video game starring John Lithgow? I must research this.
