Identity theft: Video-game characters that look alike

An infinite number of monkeys sitting in front of typewriters (or laptops) will eventually recreate the complete works of William Shakespeare. But how many artists does it take to copy the design of established video-game characters? Apparently not a lot.

Let's explore nine examples of "borrowed" fashion choices, accessories, and vehicles from classic titles.

Ken Masters (Street Fighter) vs. Ryo Sakazaki (Art of Fighting 3)

Ryo's orange gi looks very reddish in Art of Fighting 3, making the kyokugenryu karateka appear way too much like Street Fighter's Ken Masters. At least Ken doesn't have a mullet.

Cody (Final Fight) vs. Hawk (Riot Zone) vs. Axel (Streets of Rage)

If you're going on a face-bashing rampage in the streets, you might as well wear something comfortable, like jeans, a white t-shirt, and sneakers.

Brocken (World Heroes) vs. M. Bison (Street Fighter II)

I've pointed out the similarities between Brocken and M. Bison before, but I just had to do it again. Even their Scissor Kicks are almost identical. Shame on you, ADK.

Blanka (Street Fighter II) vs. Bludge (Cadillacs and Dinosaurs)

Jimmy looks like a beast because he was raised by wild animals in the Amazon forest. That makes no sense. Bludge is the result of an experiment combining dinosaur DNA with a human. That makes even less sense. All I know is that they shop at the same clothing store.

Tom-Tom (Wonder Boy) vs. Master Higgins (Adventure Island)

Adventure Island on the NES started out as a port of Sega's Wonder Boy. Somewhere along the way, Tom-Tom morphed into Master Higgins: a hideous monstrosity made to resemble Hudson Soft's spokesman Takahashi Meijin.

Guile (Street Fighter II) vs. John Crawley (Art of Fighting)

The U.S. military sure loves green on its gear, but SNK clearly designed John based on Colonel William F. Guile.

Even their stages are similar. Very similar.

Musashi (Bust-a-Move '99) vs. Ryu (Street Fighter)

Bust-a-Move '99 is a freak show all around. Playable characters include a coked-up monkey, tadpole royalty, Sonic Blast Man, and Ryu...I mean, Musashi.

Hiryu (Strider) vs. Allen (Run Saber)

If you only owned a Super NES growing up, you missed out on Capcom's cool side-scroller, Strider...unless you picked up its carbon copy, Run Saber from Atlus. What saber? I know...I never heard of it either.

Alien ship (Space Harrier 3D) vs. TIE Fighters (Super Star Wars)

The original Space Harrier pitted the protagonist against indescribable enemies, but its sequel, Space Harrier 3D, had freaking TIE Fighters in it. Well, not really, but just look at that purple ship in the image above. It's like a cross between Darth Vader's TIE Advanced and a regular TIE. The farce is strong with this one....

I never played Run Saber, but I totally remember the box art. Odd.

By Julie Bell.  Of course you remember it!

Oh shit! So that's why it looks so familiar. Her video-game art is awesome, as everything else she does.

You should have included the bizarre comparison between the Smash Bros. Melee sandbag and Bonus-kun from Sunsoft's Galaxy Fight. Those bags are just so cute.

:-P

Hmm...the Smash Bros. punching bag does have eyes, but it doesn't fight back or puke hadoukens.

I used to love Run Saber back in the day. It was like 2p simultaneous Strider.
