It came from eBay: "sealed and graded" copy of Earthbound

Sometimes video games go for astronomical prices simply because they're popular. Earthbound may not be a household name, but because of its die-hard fanbase you'd be exceptionally lucky if you found a copy for less than $100. It isn't a particularly rare title, but the obsession surrounding it pushed its price up.

This particular copy of Earthbound is sealed in an acrylic shell. That's because it was graded by the VGA, or Video Game Authority. They offer a game-rating service and seal the reviewed items in protective cases to preserve them.

Because of that, this supposedly unplayed and nearly mint game started at $2,000 and will likely go for much more than that by the end of its six-day auction. If you're interested in watching the bidding war, here's the listing.

I really don't agree with grading and locking games away. People are meant to play and enjoy them, but if more collectors start shoving their items in sealed plastic boxes, then moderately expensive titles will only skyrocket in price.

While it may suck for the average joe gamer, this isn't for them. In my eyes, this is locking away and preserving a piece of video game history. What REALLY sucks are the sellers who sell the game and manual separately to increase profits.

I've also seen several of these crop up on Ebay over the years and I'm not a fan of the comic/baseball card metric being shoehorned onto video games, especially because of the reasons that you've pointed out  most seem to purchase them for.

The good news is that time is almost always on your side when it comes to collecting if you're not in a rush. You can even piece together your own copy from bits an pieces with enough patience if you want to be a completionist about it. And there are always more than a few sellers out there willing to inject some sanity into their own auctions!

But while I think spending a grand on a hermetically sealed Earthbound makes little sense, I wouldn't think it too unusual for something like a sealed copy of NBA Elite 11 for the PS3.
