Sometimes video games go for astronomical prices simply because they're popular. Earthbound may not be a household name, but because of its die-hard fanbase you'd be exceptionally lucky if you found a copy for less than $100. It isn't a particularly rare title, but the obsession surrounding it pushed its price up.
This particular copy of Earthbound is sealed in an acrylic shell. That's because it was graded by the VGA, or Video Game Authority. They offer a game-rating service and seal the reviewed items in protective cases to preserve them.

Because of that, this supposedly unplayed and nearly mint game started at $2,000 and will likely go for much more than that by the end of its six-day auction. If you're interested in watching the bidding war, here's the listing.
I really don't agree with grading and locking games away. People are meant to play and enjoy them, but if more collectors start shoving their items in sealed plastic boxes, then moderately expensive titles will only skyrocket in price.
