Medal of Honor Warfighter was very quietly announced last week with very few details; EA stating more details to come in the future. In the current issue of the Official Xbox Magazine, developer Danger Close gave us all the oversight of what the game is to be.

As before, the campaign is being co-written by actual Tier 1 operatives, the same guys who killed Osama bin Laden last year, though Danger Close made it very clear that the game won’t feature that mission. It’s “not their story to tell.”

Evidently, we can expect the game to have a very authentic tone just like the last game. Don’t expect the game to play out like a fast-paced action movie like Call of Duty. They’re going for an authentic feel, but they don’t want to go so far as to make it a simulation.

The story will pick up some time after the events that took place in the first Medal of Honor (2010 reboot) with many of the same characters (Preacher, Voodoo, Mother, and more) returning. Although the story will remain a fiction, many of the events that will take placed will once again be based off of true occurrences.

There will also be an emphasis on the personal issues military operators face, such as the lack of communication between their families and friends. One example given was about a strained phone-call between an operator and his wife. Danger Close wants to craft together a more character heavy story.

The game will also take place in a variety of new locations, not just in the Middle East. One of the missions takes place in Isabel City in the Philippines after it has been flooded by a typhoon, thus creating a Venice like scenario with knee high water.

Another part of the article talks about how the developers want to give players more choice in what happens. For instance, players will have multiple different options available to them when it comes to breaching doors.

You could choose to simply knock the door down with your foot, or you could take a more tactical approach and toss a flashbang or grenade into the room before entering. The whole concept reminded me of the player choice options in the upcoming game, Rainbow 6.

Each scenario described above will play out differently based on the choice in tactics you made. It will finally allow the player to feel like they have some control in the game, efficiently answering one of the many complaints the reboot had in 2010, that the game was too linear.

One of the situations described is during a hostage rescue. The player has to decide which option would be safe enough to use, since there are multiple hostages inside in an unknown position. They could be near the door, or the far wall. Obviously you couldn’t blow the door open with C4, or you’d risk injuring or even killing one of the hostages.

In terms of graphics, Danger Close will be using DICE’s Frostbite Engine 2 to develop Medal of Honor Warfighter. The developers will allow for some minor destruction, realistic particle physics, and so on. My best guess would be destruction along the similar scale of the previous entry.

Danger Close will also be developing their own multiplayer component this time around instead of DICE, so it hopefully won’t feel like a dumbed down version of Battlefield. “There are hooks in our multiplayer that are… different,” said Danger Close in the article.

They didn’t talk a whole lot about the multiplayer, but there were a few details they offered to let loose like a new hardcore game mode where a single bullet will kill you. They also said that multiplayer will include various international Tier 1 factions (England, Australia, Germany, and Poland), steering clear of just focusing in on American Tier 1 Operatives.

The multiplayer will also feature a co-op mode, though it will not be available in the campaign. This could mean for the possibility of a second, spin-off campaign or perhaps just a variety of different mission based levels, similar to those found in Battlefield 3 or even Spec Ops in Call of Duty. Splitscreen play has neither been confirmed nor denied.

More information on the game has been confirmed to come out during GDC on March 6th. The game is currently set to release on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC this October.
