My Comic Strip Asks: What Happens With Your Donations to Bitmob?

Dan Hsu and Demian Linn started this site in the hopes to foster something new and exciting on the internet and the costs of doing so come out of their pocket. If you think that American Apparel and the "It's Pantytime!" ads help cover the costs, you would be mistaken. Many of us donate to help the site grow and stay afloat. But where do our donations go? What exactly do donations pay for and who receives our digital dollars?

Hopefully this comic will help shed some light on the situation. Read on, to discover the truth.

Oh, no! A terrible tragedy! My investigative journalism turned up the fact that Demian and Dan could use more of our help. Wouldn't you, the community, like to see Dan's dreams come true? Would you not also like to see this site grow to realize the true potential it holds? If you answered yes to either of those questions then I urge you, Donate Today!

Full Disclosure: In no way is this a solicitation from anyone affiliated with Bitmob. I was not asked to write this by anyone from Bitmob. My motivation for this comic was simple: I'd like to see Bitmob grow.

I'll be selfish and say that I actually kind of hope the site doesn't grow too much, as I kind of like the small-town vibe we have going on here. That being said, the site does need to sustain itself and expand it's feature-set and grow so that it can be a worthy endeavor for the creators who put in the effort to begin such a fantastic site. Donating is a worthy cause and money will certainly help these guys; they very much deserve it! Perhaps you're a little out of line for soliciting money for them, but I think I speak for the entire community when I say that your heart is in the right place for making this post and some of us should in fact donate, however small the amount, so that we can see the site and it's userbase expand. I just hope they never add a message board... or that the site never attracts too much Internet riff-raff... Well, I hope this post, however warranted or unwarranted, does get people to donate. Oh and you should continue to write Tom! Or draw... Or something...

Funny, although I think you're rendition of Demian looks more like Crispin. And while I do like the "small-town vibe" as you say, I think growth is inevitable as well as good for the site. I think we're going to see a huge growth when the new EGM hits the stands.

I clicked the donate button but it said the link was broken. Can I really donate to Bitmob? If yes, can you find the working link? Or is it in the About Us section? Oh, and the comic strip was awesome by the way.

@Lance If you scroll to the veeerrry bottom of the page there's a Donate link. I copy/pasted the link (which worked fine earlier) but I'll see if I can fix that tonight.

@Nick I know exactly what you mean about feeling selfish. I have conflicting feelings because I love the small, tight-knit community that exists right now but I know that the potential of the site trumps my feelings. I'm sure that the launching of EGM will help bring more users, insight and great articles to Bitmob and for that I'm excited. I was worried about the impression this would give with the mentioning of donations so I tried to make it as lighthearted as possible. I also emailed Hsu to make sure he didn't think it was inappropriate and said that if he did, I would gladly take this down. My own, personal, reasons for this are because I feel strongly for Bitmob. I was surprised to find that there WAS a donate feature when I asked several months ago. The link is a little out-of-the-way (in my opinion) and Dan has said that they don't want to badger or solicit the users for money. I know that, if given the option, there are many users who would be willing to toss five or ten bucks their way if they knew they could and so I hoped this would help bring attention to that in a light, silly way. Thank you for the comment. While I probably won't do a donation-themed post again I would gladly make more comics if there was a place for them on the site. And if I could think of a worthy topic for parody. And if I could nail down Demian's look. I only had his profile picture to go off of. Thanks again, Nick! I appreciate your views on this.

@Tom: For those with only time to give, don't forget the clickthroughs! My god, despite commenting on the AA ads I forgot to actually click through any of them myself. Correcting that now...

@Jonathan I didn't even think of that. I'll click on a few. Thanks for the tip.

I REALLY like Demian's look in the second panel. Wide-eyed with a snow cone in his face. That amuses me the most.

@Tom Thanks for responding! Hope my comment didn't come off as mean-spirited in anyway... I really do appreciate the fact that somebody took the time to put together a post like this.

The funny part of this is you have Dan wearing a MSU shirt when he is a Wolverine fan :)

@Toby Sharp eyes, sir :-) @Nick I did not read your comment as mean-spirited. I was grateful for your input. Plus, you got first comment on my first piece for Bitmob. Now I'll ALWAYS remember you!

Uh, what the fuck is that on my shirt?? Get it off!! Argh!!! But seriously, thanks for doing this for us, Tom. Although we're not expecting anything, we're excited you guys like this site so much. We'll hopefully have the updated Bitmob 1.1 up tonight! I'm sure it'll come with a few new problems that we'll need to iron out, but hopefully, it's an improvement overall on the tech.

I enjoyed this comic a little to thoroughly :D.I don't have too much of an issue with the soliciting since it's not in your face like some sites, and even if Dan and Demian came to us about donations. The comic is a great way to get that out,and like some of,I too like the tight-knit community here.Hopefully this won't detract from its original conception once the new EGM comes out,but with some luck it won't be much of a difference considering that your real name has to be used, which I'm sure will derailed alot of would be troublemakers from posting.Just no messagesboards and I think everything will still be fine for the most part ;).

@Mike Thanks for compliment! I was hoping you wouldn't see this as me trying to infringe on your Bitmob comic monopoly. I've been doing comics like these for my friends on livejournal since 2005 and figured I could try it here. @Antonio I was hoping the call for donations wouldn't sound too pleading or desperate. I've never tried to rally a group for "a buck or five...or ten!" and don't don't have the experience of, say, NPR in getting the word. I honestly figured that if everyone who follows Bitmob on Twitter just donated five or ten bucks each it would be an enormous help to the guys here. Just think of the programmers they could hire instead of asking for free help! Maybe it's a pipedream but it doesn't hurt to try, right?

Well, finally! Didn't know this has been de-posted after the 1.1 update. Not sure anyone else is looking for this besides me though.

@Rich Not that it matters anymore (it's been over a year) but I said that because it was showing up as unpublished in my profile and I'd heard that the 1.1 update did that to a few posts.
