Early this morning, Atlus sent out a sneaky little email to their fan mailing list announcing the localized PSP version of Persona 2: Innocent Sin slated for this fall. While this would normally be in the News Blips later on in the day, this is a very big deal.
Persona 2 is a two-part game with distinct protagonists for each installment. While Eternal Punishment did get a Western release, Atlus deemed Innocent Sin too risky to localize. Though the issues seem minor now, the presence of Adolph Hitler and a gay relationship between the male protagonist and a classmate made the game a little too risqué in the late '90s. Hopefully neither element is so problematic that they have to remove them. Well, I don't know if anyone would be sad to see Hitler go....
The confirmed changes are in-keeping with Atlus' recent remakes. The visual and audio styles now reflect the rest of the series, but you can toggle between Shoji Meguro's new soundtrack and the original.
Atlus hasn't said much about a remake of Eternal Punishment, but it's probably safe to say that if they're going to this much trouble for the first half, the second isn't too far off. But that may depend on how well Innocent Sin does.
Either way, Western gamers now have a chance to get the missing Persona 2 experience. Well, if they haven't already indulged in the fan translation Atlus knows about but hasn't pursued.
