EDITOR'S NOTEfrom Eduardo Moutinho

I have faith in the Bitmob community. This is your chance to show the game-writing world the storylines that you want to see in your favorite titles.

September's winding down, and we've had a grand total of zero entries submitted for this month’s writing challenge. Now is as good a time as any to remind you that it's still going on. So take off those journalist hats and put on those game-writer ones as you delve into what it takes to write for the the titles you love and play so much.

The Prompt

  1. Develop an excerpt from a game using a movie-style script, storyboard, or flowchart format. You can use an existing franchise or start from scratch. Write more than just a cut-scene. This is the big leagues people!

  2. Post it to the Mobfeed with the tag “Bitmob Writing Challenge” by September 30.

Excerpt Examples

  • A full case from a game like Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, L.A. Noire, or Professor Layton and the Curious Village. Be sure to include puzzles, obstacles, and whatever you would typically find.
  • An RPG battle like the Koopa Bros. encounter in Paper Mario.
  • A rival fight from a release like Street Fighter 4 complete with in-match dialogue and different endings depending on the victor.
  • A dialogue tree like those found in Mass Effect or The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, including choices that affect the outcome of a mission.

 Additional Resources

If you’re still having trouble, check out this example piece I wrote up.

You know how you’re always saying that game writing isn’t up to par with movies or books? This is your chance to put your money where your mouth is!

Jourdan, something like the following is sufficient (more than sufficient, actually): http://bitmob.com/articles/a-tale-of-two-goombas

Exactly. Think of these guidelines more as a way to organize your thoughts rather than hard and fast rules. The important thing is that you experience the process of what a person who writes games goes through during the development of them.
