Rockstar's Got Balls - GTA: The Ballad of Gay Tony Announced

Rockstar just announced The Ballad of Gay Tony, a new downloadable episode for Grand Theft Auto 4. The official press release is copied below if you're interested in such things, but I gotta say...this logo is FAB-u-LOUS!

I'm quite impressed that Rockstar doesn't shy away from potentially controversial subject matters. When the country was in tizzy over the violence in GTA, out comes Manhunt, a much, much more brutal game. I even complimented Rockstar for this in my EGM review of Manhunt at the time, although some readers and my fellow reviewers didn't agree, calling it more a desperate plea for attention and sales.

But trust me. The heat that politicians, Jack Thompsons, and middle America can put on, Rockstar doesn't want...especially when legal costs are involved. So with The Ballad of Gay Tony (and its FAB-u-LOUS! logo), I'm still glad the publisher is willing to go where other games and Miss California dare not.

It's just too bad some things are out of Rockstar's control. They got screwed bad when the original Manhunt 2 was slapped with a retail-killing Adults-Only ESRB rating.

Here's more info on Gay Tony's adventures via the press release:

New York, NY - May 26, 2009 - Rockstar Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), is proud to announce the fall release of both the second episode of Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony - exclusively for download on Xbox LIVE® online entertainment network, and Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, which will include both episode one The Lost and Damned, and episode two The Ballad of Gay Tony together on a single disc exclusively for Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

"Liberty City is the most vibrant game world we've created yet. The episodic structure has allowed us to interweave stories, gameplay and atmosphere in a whole new way," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "The team at Rockstar North have yet again surpassed themselves, and made something that is both epic and very innovative. This episode's focus on high-end night life contrasts with the biker gangs portrayed in The Lost and Damned, whilst giving us a lot of new gameplay possibilities."

Grand Theft Auto IV's second downloadable episode, The Ballad of Gay Tony injects Liberty City with an overdose of guns, glitz, and grime. As Luis Lopez, part-time hoodlum and full-time assistant to legendary nightclub impresario Tony Prince (aka "Gay Tony"), players will struggle with the competing loyalties of family and friends, and with the uncertainty about who is real and who is fake in a world in which everyone has a price.

Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City delivers two games on one disc - the all-new episode The Ballad of Gay Tony and the first episode, The Lost and Damned - together on disc for the first time - for Xbox 360 for $39.99 and will not require a copy of the original Grand Theft Auto IV to play.

The Ballad of Gay Tony will release on Xbox LIVE this fall for $19.99 or 1600 MS points and requires players to have Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE membership to download.

Gotta give Rockstar props for continuing to push boundaries despite being the center of so much political turmoil. Glad they are still going strong and looking forward to this one.

Wow, I was just browsing Destructoid and saw the same news story but glossed over it because I assumed it had to be a joke. Now though I'm more than a little pissed I don't own a 360. It looks like more of the same, but that was so good in the first place that I couldn't care less.

Haha, I thought this was a joke at first until I saw it elsewhere. RS really likes messing with people, I guess. This is awesome news, I have no doubt in RS's ability to create great games with entertaining narratives. Can't wait!!!

I was hoping for Rockstar to do something where we play as a cop or FBI agent, but when I saw this I realized Rockstar knows what I want more than I do! I am sure this and Lost and the Damned will land on PSN eventually, right?

I started writing this story, knowing it was legit because I received the press release from Rockstar directly. But then I started wondering and worrying, what if someone spooked a Rockstar account, and I was a victim of a well-crafted joke? But the official site confirmed it, so I was safe to post. Whew. ;)

Michael, if that's true, then you're one of the gayest people I know!
I thought gay meant happpy?
Actually, that reminds of this one time I made some joke in EGM about the Mario Bros. being gay, and some readers took offense to however I mentioned it (it was a long time ago -- I don't remember the details). So to defend it, I said that very thing: gay means "happy." And to illustrate my point, I had our artist draw Mario and Luigi holding hands, skipping along...in a very gay way (both definitions). :)

Happiness is not a defining trait of the GTA series. I therefore assume the "other" meaning. Let's assume they'll treat it with a little more dignity than some of the side missions in previous incarnations of the series have.

Matt: Have you seen Gay Tony? I don't think "dignity" is happening. :)

At least maybe people will realize GameFork is full of shit now.

I can't wait to see the advertising plastered all over Xbox LIVE. If they even do it. I can see Microsoft making them change the title at least.

I'm so going to marry this game.

Apparently this and Lost and Damned are both going to be released together as a standalone retail disc. People are acting as though this is revolutionary and standalone expansions haven't been around forever on PC.

To clarify, this is in addition to being downloadable on the marketplace.

If Jack Thompson says anything bad about this game, I'll just call him a homophobic! Same for the news networks.

So what's more gay, biker gangs or Gay Tony?

I'm just glad this and The Lost and Damned are coming out on a retail disc.I unfortunately traded-in GTAIV before I found out you needed the disk to play any future DLC. And on a side-note, does the poster remind anyone else of Vice City.

I passed over this article a couple times assuming it was a joke article, but then I read elsewhere about this too. I can't believe this is true. lol. I don't get all this "good for them" talk about Rockstar. The gay GTA4 character was insensitive and offensive for the sake of crude laughs, so I'm going under the assumption Gay Tony will follow a similiar path. I'm aware that GTA characters have largely been characterized as being sterotypes, but never the lead character. I just hope they pay the character a similiar respect to the last GTA4 leads, if not more. Just saying, it's a little too early to applaud Rockstar for this.

If you lot think this is risky for Rockstar over there in good old USA then in the UK where i reside, this is going to be ripped to shreds not just for the wording used but for how the font is illustrated in the Stereotypic flare which is tagged to the gay community. those Rockstar boys love to irritate their politically correct British roots. me personally cannot wait for the reveal trailer, the tease alone is cracking me up ( hard core laughs );D

I think it needs to be mentioned that just because the game is titled the "Ballad of Gay Tony" doesn't mean the lead playable character Luis Lopez will be gay. But maybe Luis and Tony will have an undercover gay relationship in the game. Whatever the case, I'm sure that the story will be well written. I can't wait to see what Rockstar has in store for this one. Is this the last scheduled DLC release for GTA 4?
How is this thing going to be stand alone on the retail disc? I haven't played Lost & the Damned yet, but I assume it takes place in Liberty City. Is Rockstar just going to rip out all of the missions from the original title? I don't get it!
