"Skyrim Just Got Boring"

-said my friend Mike, twitching his lips into half a frown. "I finished most of the storyline and got pretty high up in level, but I just lost interest." Now, I'm not saying it's unusual for players to lose interest in games, especially before doing everything but with Skyrim things were supposed to be different, or so it seemed. We've all opened up games and though 'well i won't need any other games for a while.' For me, those games were GTA 4, Super Smash Bros, and Little Big Planet. And I became bored of them all.

What Skyrim lacks that other games have is simple: a multiplayer component. Sure, the thing about Skyrim that is supposed to keep you interested is the sheer amount of stuff one can do. But this is also the games downfall. Take a look at Call of Duty, Red Dead Redemption, Little Big Planet: After the storyline is completed there is a whole range of mulitplayer features to jump into, and I feel that players are more receptive to a multiplayer experience than an extended single player one.

I'm not saying that Bethesda should throw in a multiplayer component, but if they want to increase their appeal, they might as well. Especially with the anonuncement of the Elder Scrolls Online, it shouldn't take much just to have a friend jump into my Skyrim game and battle giant spiders and dragons at my side.

I can't see how a multiplayer component could do anything other than hinder the Skyrim experience. Multiplayer is largely reliant on competition—outliers excepted—and I can't see any way of implementing that.

Further, with such a large world it's not going to be easy to enforce the necessary limits (one person in Winterhold and another at the Throat of the World is going to make for a poor "multiplayer") without directly impeding upon the gameplay. Fable 2's system was at times entirely too painful to bother with, and that's the best attempt I've seen.

What would you do anyway?
