In Defense of "Unnecessary" Sequels

I am guilty of disliking what I deem "unnecessary" sequels. I've ranted endlessly about my disappointment in the very idea of BioShock 2, and I question the value of an Endless Ocean part two. Rakim made me realize the importance of these games: Making company-supporting money in order to support future creativity and IPs. While I accept this, BioShock's atmosphere did not need a continuation.
