HomefrontThe Community Spotlight highlights some of the best articles that didn't quite make the front page. This week, we bid farewell to the creators of Homefront, ponder the shifting market of World of Warcraft, examine a complicated relationship with Fallout 3, and check out the launch of the Virtual Console service on the Nintendo 3DS. Oh, and we spend some quality family time, too.

R.I.P. Kaos Studios -- The future of game development?
By Jeff Heilig
It's becoming standard procedure in the industry -- once a studio finishes a title, they promptly axe most of their staff. It's even worse if a game underperforms, like Homefront did. Jeff also hints at a growing trend of publishers forcing their employees to move to far-flung locales (Quebec, in this case) to take advantage of friendly tax codes.

World of Warcraft: The challenge of holding two audiences
By Jeff Heilig
Jeff's second piece in today's Spotlight breaks down various changes in World of Warcraft's gameplay to make it easier for new users to jump in. Nerfed raids and lower barriers to entry have helped WoW maintain its subscription base...but at the cost of alienating the hardcore. Maybe the WoW juggernaut is more vulnerable than it appears.

Fallout 3 and me: A love/hate relationship
By Ryan Finley
I could never really get into Fallout 3, and some of Ryan's crticisms explain why. On the other hand, the game's setting and freedom made it a huge hit. "When I measure a game’s worth, I have to look at how many hours of pure enjoyment I got out of it," Ryan says. "With all its faults, Fallout 3 still comes out way ahead in that regard."

Aging gracefully: The 3DS Virtual Console and nostalgia's warm embrace
By Tristan Damen
I don't own a 3DS yet, but the thought of playing all my old Game Boy and GBA favorites is almost enough to convince me to get one. Except, as Tristan points out, the Virtual Console service on the 3DS launched with only five games. "I have no doubt that my patience will depreciate if I don't see some of a certain blue hedgehog's adventures soon enough," Tristan says. I'd have to agree.

My buddy and me
By Joshua Dennison
In addition to getting the song from that old commercial stuck in my head, Joshua delivers a great anecdote about his family's experience with Kinectimals, complete with bare-bottomed toddlers. Good to remember that video games can go beyond the traditional first-person shooters and JRPGs.
