I have the next ten days off work and plan to spend each and every moment relaxing and getting caught up on some gaming. Steam currently has some great deals on not only modern hit games, but essential classics from the past. I did some digging and found ten great games I highly recommend to PC gamers.
1. Torchlight - $9.99
Everybody has heard of this dungeon exploring loot fest that is best known as a highly polished Diablo clone. I myself have never played any of the Diablo games so I will be checking this out.
2. Far Cry - $4.49
Before Crysis there was Far Cry, a go anywhere first person shooter with extremely bright and pretty environments (the graphics still look great to this day) and some of the best weapon sound effects ever heard in a first person shooter. If you enjoyed Crysis but haven't yet played Far Cry, do so now. This game is a whopper too, so for $4.49 you're getting a lot of value.
3. Deus Ex: GOTY Edition - $6.69
Open world non-linear first person shooter with RPG elements, set in the dystopian future. Sure, the graphics aren't pretty anymore but this game influenced modern titles like Fallout 3, Mass Effect etc. A PC classic.
4. Half-Life - $7.49
Valve's classic FPS masterpiece. If you haven't jumped into the shoes of silent protagonist Gordon Freeman and blasted (or crowbarred in the face) aliens from another dimension yet, you have no right calling yourself a PC gamer. (Also available in the prettier Source Engine rendered 'Half-Life: Source' at the same price).
5. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - $9.99
Forget San Andreas and GTA IV, this is the best Grand Theft Auto game in my opinion. Play as Tommy Vercetti (voiced by Ray Liotta) during the neon tinted 1980's. Complete with awesome 80's music.
6. Braid - $2.49
For under $3, this dreamy and challenging puzzle platformer is an absolute steal. One of the best independent games ever made, the puzzles in Braid will challenge even the most clever players and the pretty graphics will satisfy the most snobbish of graphics whores.
7. Max Payne - $9.99
An extremely solid story driven third person shooter, Max Payne is easy to pick up and play and hard to put down with its dark film noir atmosphere, excellent if not slightly cheesy voice acting and interesting story cutscenes.
8. Plants VS. Zombies - $7.49
As addictive as it is quirky and fun, PopCap's Plants VS. Zombies has you defending waves of zombies with an arsenal of...plants? Just try it. You'll fall in love.
9. Indigo Prophecy (Farenheit) - $3.39
This suspenseful mindf*ck of a mystery game is one of my favorites. If the forthcoming spiritual successor, Heavy Rain, is on your radar, definitely play this first. A unique and compelling experience to say the least.
10. Beyond Good & Evil - $4.99
One of the best games ever made that nobody played, and certainly one of my all-time favorite games. Action, stealth, driving, puzzle solving, and even photography, this game has it all. Where's the sequel Ubisoft?!
There are literally dozens of other great games to be had for under $10 so I suggest you head over to Steam and check it out for yourself.
