This Week in Video-Game History: November 14 - 20

This week is absolutely crazy. From several significant console launches to the birth of three notable Japanese developers, the history just doesn't stop rolling.

November 14

1994: Sega debuts their 32X attachment for the Genesis. While they claimed it would bring arcade-quality gaming into the living room, the console's library was small and mostly crap. But, it did give us Kolibri -- arguably the finest hummingbird-based shooter.

1997: Postal is released. Since the future of video-game-retailer rights hangs in the balance, let's not tell the politicians about this ridiculously murderous series.

November 15

2001: The original Xbox is released. I remember trying one out at a mall kiosk around this time. I don't know if my hands are comedically small (since they haven't grown since 2001) or if the controller designer suffered from elephantiasis.

2002: In keeping with their fall release plans, Microsoft flips on the mighty Xbox Live switch exactly one year after the console launched.

November 16

1952: Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto is born.

1993: Sony Online Entertainment is founded.

2004: Half-Life 2 is released. Maybe in another four years we'll see a playable version of Half-Life 2: Episode 3. You know, on the 10th anniversary of the game.

November 17

1960: Takashi Tezuka is born. He is currently the General Manager of the EAD Software Development Department at Nintendo, and if you like any of the company's notable releases, he probably worked on it.

2002: Metroid Prime is released. I'm very sad that the Prime series isn't considered canon.

2009: EA shuts down Pandemic Studios. Their Twitter page remains.

November 18

1966: Tetsuya Takahashi is born. He is known for his work on Xenogears and the Xenosaga series.

1993: The Atari Jaguar is released. No one cared, especially after they saw Air Cars.

1998: Penny Arcade publish their first comic. It's amazing how far they've come since then.

2001: The GameCube is released.

November 19

1998: Half-Life is released. Wow, even Valve is consistent. This week must be magical.

2006: The Nintendo Wii goes on sale -- not that you could actually find one.... A mere four years later and now every retailer in the country wants nothing more than to unload the mountains of Wiis cluttering up their back rooms.

November 20

1992: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is released.

1996: Insomniac releases their first game for the PlayStation. It was a first-person shooter called Disruptor

58, Shiggy?  Nice, he's still got a good 30 years of game-making left in him.

John Wayne?

And, SHIT, if I had known about that humming bird simulator, I would've made a more valiant effort to obtain a 32X.

And also Broken Pixels fucking kicked ass, that is all, thank you.

...I liked the 32X. It was awesomely bad. Knuckles' Chaotix, Star Wars Arcade, Virtua Fighter, and a horrible Doom port? Couldn't get much better than that.
