Why do you game?

It was about 1:30 am and I had to be at work early in the morning. For all intents and purposes, I should have been in bed hours ago. But the task at hand was infinitely more important than my job making sandwiches all day. I was on the verge of finding and capturing the serial killer who had been murdering people ever since I moved into the small, rural town of Inaba. Yes, I was playing Persona 4, and had finally made it to the boss battle of a very long and difficult dungeon crawl. I had been playing for almost 4 hours straight, but I just couldn't let myself go to sleep until I finished off the boss and saw what happened next.

Persona 4

After having been thrashed by said boss twice already, I decided to grind a few more levels and fuse the Personas that would give me access to "Black Frost" and the devastating combination of Mind Charge and Agidyne skills. So, was staying up late to the point where I knew I would be dead tired at work the next morning really worth it? I have to say, I truly believe it was. The hours of grinding and strategizing for the dungeons final confrontation and finally walking away victorious filled me with a sense of accomplishment that I could only dream about getting at my part-time job.

This is why I game. Because working a dead end, minimum wage job part-time at a sandwich shop isn't exactly my idea of fulfilling work. Sure, it's only until I finish college, but any time spent not doing something that I enjoy feels like a complete waste to me.

That's why I stay up later that I know I should, clutching my DSi at night, trying my damndest to solve that last puzzle in Professor Layton before I hit the light switch.

Serving sandwiches and coffee and such to a bunch of rude, stuck up, and unhealthy city employees isn't what I consider to be the highlight of my day nor do I consider it purposeful social interaction. Teaming up with friends to slay elder dragons and wyverns in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, however, is teamwork and social interaction at its best.

I guess my point is, I will never consider gaming to be a waste of my time. The time and effort put into breaking your highest score, upgrading your best armor or just seeing the story through to the end is always worth losing a couple hours of sleep.

I'm with you on the summer job front. I work in a factory during my summers away from college and gaming is a major release from the tedium of assembly work.

I game for several reasons. 1)It's fun. 2) I enjoy the stories of many games that I play. 3) I enjoy seeing what others do with games once they're released (mods, maps, etc.). 4) I enjoy how good games make you think about what it is they're doing/saying.

Gaming is definitely not a waste of time! It is a wonderful release, especially if you are able to move beyond mind-numbing crawls and really slip into the action. Gaming has definitely helped me through rough times in my life. When all I could do was afford electricity, I would play a game and forget my troubles.

Oh! I remember the other thing I was going to say. Persona 4 is ridiculously addictive. I can't get my hands on the PS2 now because my fiance is on his second (consecutive) run through of Persona 4. He's not even doing New Game+! He's just playing through it from the beginning, no pomp, nothing. I am so excited about the new Professor Layton game. I hope that it does well enough to get us the third game in time.

There is nothing better than Gamers talking about why they love video games..;D Until we all have the opportunity to become the next Julius Caesar and command 30,000 soldiers, construct a wooden bridge across the Rhine river in 9 days, conquer unknown lands full of "monsters and giants", declare ourselves Dictator for Life and have a salad named after us, I will keep playing video games, because they are more fun. Caesar would have kicked ass at Advance Wars!

Great article, Louie. I agree that games are far more worthwhile than mind-numbing jobs. It's a shame that so many people still see them as child's play, but video games have plenty of uses beyond simple entertainment. I guess I like video games because they're fun and fulfilling. Sometimes in the real world you can't accomplish what you want, or things don't go your way, but in video games, you can often make that happen. @Lance Hahaha, Casear would definitely would have loved Advance Wars and Starcraft.

I game because I got nothing else do to. If something that gives me more enjoyment or is something I have to do (like school), I will do that. Until then, in my free time I game.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! It's great to know that there are others out there who feel exactly how I do about gaming!

I have this same problem. I work at 730am everyday that I work. I usually don't get in bed until 2 or 3am. I figure I'm going to be miserable at my job whether I am tired or not, so why not stay up and play games? I have a deep love for gaming, which I am sure that is the case for most people on this site. I've made it through some hard times growing up with them. Where some people turn to things like alcohol to deal with problems, I would just flip the switch and get away for a few hours then come back and deal with what's going on. Games are also to me the best form of entertainment. A movie is a few hours at most but a game is hours of entertainment. How could you not want to play games?

Again - just wanted to say thanks for the replies. Video games have definitely helped me to get through some tough times as a child and as an adult and I honestly feel as though I never really felt the need to turn to drugs or alcohol partly because of them!
