You hit on some interesting points but ultimately - in my opinion - it comes down to the writing of the game. Bioshock was immersive not because your character was simply silent but because of the incredible atmosphere and surrounding characters that the game provided the player with.
The Sands of Time was particularly immersive to me due to the 'story book' nature of the discourse. He was telling his story to you and the seemingly fourth wall breaking moments were whole-heartedly appreciated by me, at least.
Another thing this made me think about was the progression of the Timesplitters games. Odd choice, I know but the fact that the characters barely said anything in the first game and there barely being a story, to the second game in which there was a more fleshed out tale and more lines of dialogue and to finally the third game in which there was a proper coherent story and the characters we've played over the past two games are living up to the archetype of their respective genres. The great thing about the third game was that as a player of the previous two, I had pretty much made up my mind about what the characters were like and when the third game came around, they were all I imagined them to be"

Indeed there is some friends whose escapes are somewhat more extreme than a healthy dose of Resident Evil 5 shall we say. University/College can get a bit strenuous at times though and while I don't condone such things I can certainly understand it.
Tuesday is my first exam and I am actually feeling quite optimistic about it so I'll be sure to let you chaps know how it goes. :"
