Half-Life 2 Pries into Game of the Decade

As New Year's Eve draws closer, you're no doubt contemplating the parties you'll attend, the friends you'll see, and the resolutions you'll make. But this new year brings added cause for celebration as we turn the corner on another decade.

Crispy Gamer celebrated the impending holiday with a Game of the Decade competition -- a cutthroat battle royale among excellent titles which lasted weeks. Ten years of retrospection and more than 35,000 votes later, Crispy Gamer announced the winner; Half-Life 2 pulled ahead of World of Warcraft and its more than 11 million subscribers. The influential first-person shooter won by a margin of just 130 votes (six tenths of a percent). I guess WoW players were too glued to their screens to bother registering for the vote!

Fanyboy-fueled rants of Internet rage will likely continue due to the razor-thin outcome of this competition, but I'm just glad Kingdom Hearts didn't win. Who in his right mind carries around a key sword, anyway? [via Crispy Gamer]

I haven't even though of game of the decade, let alone Half Life 2 being there.

I don't really know which game deserves it.

@Toby- Except in the case of Beyond Good & Evil, it's a pig behind a woman

I was thinking of game of the decade myself recently, and thought myself that it was Half-Life 2. Sweet vindication.

The game of the decade was the battle royale voting mechanism. Twists and turns, and a great surprise ending.

Not to offend anyone, but I think it is completely missing the point to name the best game of the decade. There isn't one. You could maybe make a top 100 games released in the last ten years, but never get close to naming a top one or ten or even fifty.

@Brian I wasn't able to get that far thank you for pointing that out.

One of these days, I will play a Half-Life game...
