Bitmob & GamePro: Your Chance to Appear in Print

Bitmob and GamePro are very pleased to announce that we are partnering together to nurture new editorial talent. Starting this month we are beginning a program that will reward one talented writer each month with having their Bitmob article appear in GamePro magazine.

Bitmob's Dan, Demian, Jason and I will pick the article that we think is most worthy each month, and it will be included as a full-page editorial in the magazine alongside articles from noted contributors such as Robert Ashley, John Ricciardi, and Joe Rybicki (among many others.)

Some guidelines for you:

With the relaunch of the new GamePro, our emphasis is as much on the culture of video games as it is on the products. As I mentioned in the editor's letter of the February issue (pictured), our goal is to provide mature, thought-provoking stories about games, but also (very importantly) about the people associated with them. In the coming months we will endeavor to shine a light on the talents that build the experiences we all love so much, and also on the people that play them and are inspired by them. This doesn't just mean developer interviews -- it also means essays about the way that games affect us personally, and how they change our views about the world around us. Take a look at Leigh Alexander's recent essay about Bayonetta as a great example.

To be considered, please write about 600-700 words right here on Bitmob. We'll select the first winner by January 20 for inclusion in the April issue, which will hit newsstands on March 9. We'll post reminders each month regarding deadlines for subsequent issues.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with for this - and also working with the Bitmob community to help develop the careers of new writers.

Thanks, everyone,

-- John Davison

Hot damn!

Bitmob is hooking up with magazines like what.
Andrew Hiscock , January 07, 2010
Wow, what an amazing opportunity for all of us. Thanks, John!

Despite considering Gamepro one of the less desirable game magazines, your discussion of the magazine's reboot on 4 Guys 1UP really got me interested. It's about time America has it's own Edge competitor.

Now that I've kissed ass, I need to get to work on my next article.

+_+
Allistair Everett , January 07, 2010
Woah wait what...? Son of a, I guess I should actually write something
Derek Lavigne , January 07, 2010
wow. thats a heck of an opportunity! go gamepro
Ben Maltz-Jones , January 07, 2010
@Derek, that's never a bad idea.
Alejandro Quan-Madrid , January 07, 2010
@Ben It is. I hope we get some intriguing, insightful pieces from you guys for GamePro.
Jason Wilson , January 07, 2010
Pretty awesome opportunity for all the great talent around here. Good luck everyone
Eric Majkut , January 07, 2010
Don't forget: Any good stories we find, we're going to look to promote to the front page of Bitmob anyways! This is just extra incentive in that one of those may get chosen to be immortalized in print.
Dan Hsu , January 07, 2010
I just want to let you know that I love you guys. I am very happy that I renewed my Gamepro subscription last week.
Chris Davidson , January 07, 2010
Why are you doing such a cool thing? Is there a demand for talent or are you just trying to foster a community? Carving a niche?
Douglas Michael Zorn , January 07, 2010
This is pretty incredible guys, congrats on the partnership and congrats to those lucky and talented enough to land an article with them. Here's hoping I'm so lucky!

Garret Staus , January 07, 2010
A pretty amazing competition, for sure. If only there was an easy way to get Gamepro in the UK!
Phillipe Bosher , January 07, 2010
@Douglas, should we not do cool things?
Alejandro Quan-Madrid , January 07, 2010
Good luck to everyone as I do think this is a great way.
Toby Davis , January 07, 2010
@Garret Come up with something interesting and write about it. One of the best things about this is the 600-700-word limit -- it's going to help teach those who participate the importance of focusing their points and self-editing.

Potentially, everyone who takes part in this could become a better writer, even if we don't select them. It's a wonderful writing exercise.
Jason Wilson , January 07, 2010
I guess I'm going to have to start buying GamePro again. It's been years.
Adam Tierney , January 07, 2010
Another great step forward for GamePro. Keep up the good work, John!
Nicholas Lohr , January 07, 2010
@Alejandro Doing cool things is great and I hope to contribute myself. I just see the world in a way where everything has an angle. Hope this doesn't come off as trolling.
Douglas Michael Zorn , January 07, 2010
@Douglas The "angle" is to generate insightful content, reflective of the changing needs of gamers, and to help nurture new editorial talent. Hopefully we can help launch new freelance careers for some aspiring writers. Bitmob is the perfect environment for that.
John Davison , January 07, 2010
So, do we just post the article as a blog post and hope for the best, or do we post it somewhere in particular?
Phillipe Bosher , January 07, 2010
Hopefully you're successful in achieving that goal and providing readers with quality content and expanding your readership with up and coming writers.
Douglas Michael Zorn , January 07, 2010
Sounds like a wonderful opportunity for us writers, will begin to toil on my next piece of work.
Juan Letona , January 07, 2010
I'm glad I finally took the plunge and joined Bitmob. This is exactly the kind of community I've been looking for. Thanks for continuing to provide us all with opportunities like this, and free of charge to boot.
Michael Rousseau , January 07, 2010
@Michael, if you want the Bitmob boots, we still charge for those....
Alejandro Quan-Madrid , January 07, 2010
Oh wow, this is awesome.

Although we don't get Gamepro here in Ireland smilies/sad.gif
Ultan O'Connell , January 07, 2010
@Phillipe: Just write your article using MyBlog as you normally would.

Good luck, everyone!
Brett Bates , January 07, 2010
@Alejandro, I'll buy whatever you're selling. I'll drink the Kool-Aid.
Michael Rousseau , January 07, 2010
Do we need to any tag to our article, or just post it as normal? And the writer will be contacted right? I'm assuming you're not just going to take the article are directly post it in the magazine.
Art Siriwatt , January 07, 2010
Wow this is great! This is a great way for aspiring enthusiast journalists to get published in a big-name print magazine. Go Bitmob go!
Michael Bradley , January 07, 2010
Also, Go GamePro go!
Michael Bradley , January 07, 2010
Being relatively new to the scene here, where exactly are the non-staff suppose to write these stories/op-ed/reviews etc?

Thanks,

Scott Hall
scott hall , January 07, 2010
Scott - You log in to the website, click the "Profile" button near the top (under the main logo), then click the green "Write New Entry" button. After that, you go eat dinner, and by the time you get back, the editor should have loaded to the point where you can start inserting your text.
Jay Henningsen , January 07, 2010
@Art No tags necessary. We're going to keep track of the pieces we feel are worthy of consideration. Just write as normal!
Jason Wilson , January 07, 2010
LOL thanks Jay.
scott hall , January 07, 2010
@Jay The Blog fix is coming soon.
Rich McGrath , January 07, 2010
Gamepro? I thought it was EGM that the Mob was in cahoots with? Or is it both?
Mike Hawkins , January 07, 2010
I'm curious... are these writers going to be "paid" or will their "pay" simply be creating content that you will use for free, "paying" them with the "honor" of being published? 'Cause, and I'm just sayin', this seems an awful lot like a way to get content for the magazine without having to pay anyone to write it.
Ed Webb , January 07, 2010
BTW, I didn't post that to be a smartass. I hope you really do have the intentions of nurturing new editorial content providers by paying them as freelance writers from the first article, and not the twelfth or something.
Ed Webb , January 07, 2010
I don't think GamePro is ready to talk about that aspect yet, Ed, but I think the writers featured in GamePro will be happy with the result.
Demian Linn , January 07, 2010
To be quite honest, I think the prospect of using this oppurtunity as a stepping stone to a future where pay is received is more than amazing. The 'pay' of having people like Hsu, Davison etc. saying your work is good enough to be printed would be amazing.
Phillipe Bosher , January 08, 2010
Wow that Heavy Rain cover looks godawful, nice idea, but when the barcode is the first thing I look at, something is wrong.
Rick Miller , January 08, 2010
What an awesome hook-up for BitMob users! The chance to see my name next to the likes of Robert Ashley seems far more prestigious (really) than being included in the letters section of the magazine. That automatically sets BitMobbers apart from the standard readership.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, GamePro. We won't let you down!
Spencer Gregory , January 08, 2010
Wow, wondering how this is going to fly with the new EGM....
Oscuro , January 09, 2010
This is an awesome thing and an impressive opportunity for bitmobbers.

I just honestly can't ever see any of the stuff I crap out and barely polish getting up to that kind of lofty standard.
Damnit, Jim! I'm a loud mouth, not an editor!
