31 Games I Would like to Play Before the Apocalypse Pt.2
Untitled
Saturday, October 09, 2010

Hey there Bitmobbers, this is the second of part of my list of 31 (Halloween rememeber?) games that I would like to play before the apparently coming Apocalypse. Last time I ran down numbers 31-21.

So let's continue on shall we? MuWuhHahahaha!

20: Seaman- Sega Dreamcast

This one (like Moonwalker) can also be filed under morbid curiosity. I have to say that I find this game’s premise to be very intriguing. The very idea of focusing an entire game raising a fish in the primordial swamp until it evolves into a human does seem rather far-fetched. But I still can’t help but want to play it. Even if the manfish creatures are nightmare fuel.

19: Psychonauts- Xbox, Xbox Live Arcade

For as long as I had my original Xbox, I can’t think of any other game in the console’s library that has peeked in and out of my curiosity more than Psychonauts. I remember watching for commercials for the game and thinking that it looked weird but in a good way and maybe I should give it a shot but I would like to read some reviews first. I read the reviews and they are overwhelmingly positive so I thought about picking it up. Then during a trip to my local Blockbuster, I see a copy of the game and think about buying but then I see a copy of Metal Slug 3. They were the same price but I could only get one or the other, so I picked up Metal Slug 3 because it was more of a sure thing. I went back to the store about a month later but Psychonauts was gone.

Years later I picked up Brutal Legend (more on that another day) for my Xbox 360 and I found it interesting and funny. I then learned that it came from the same studio (Double Fine) and creator (the hilarious Tim Schafer) of Psychonauts and again I thought about giving it a chance. Now that I know it can be purchased on XBLA, I think I might download it one of these days.

18: Battle Kid & the Fortress of Peril- Nintendo Entertainment System

I remember reading about this game last December and knowing that I just had to play. For those of you who never heard about Battle Kid, let me fill you in. Battle Kid is newest NES game to come out (released this past February) since Wisdom Tree released Sunday Funday back in 1995. It features Mega Man and I Want to Be the Guy style gameplay and is tough as nails. I mean this game’s difficulty is quickly becoming legendary. The guys over at Screwattack could not get past the first boss without dying at least 48 times. For the sheer difficulty and nostalgia alone I want to give this one a try. Now only to find a copy. And then to find an NES.

17: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night- Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Xbox Live Arcade

I actually didn’t play the Castlevania series that much as a kid. In fact the only games in the series I played back then were the original on the NES and the second game in the Game Boy series and I remember enjoying both games very much (even if they were really hard). When I first saw Symphony of the Night, I was interested. I really like the idea of being one of the Vampires as opposed to one of the vampire slayers in the Belmont clan. Not too mention that I was also impressed with the fact that it remained a 2D sidescroller when it could have been a 3D game. I thought the improved visuals were really impressive and the variety of creepy monsters was also pretty damn cool. I also think the addition of RPG elements is interesting. This is one title that I’m definitely going to pick up from Xbox Live.

16: Earthbound- Super Nintendo Entertainment System

I first heard about this in High School when I was in the Writing Club, which was just me and two other people mostly talking about anime, comics, games and other nerdy things, oh and sometimes we would share our aspiring works of fiction. One day, one of our three members read from an Earthbound fan fic she was writing. I thought it was interesting and wanted to check it out, so I read up on it and looked at some of the characters and thought it would be something that I would really like to play. There is just something about children (are they in any way related to Mother Nature?) with special powers (with the help of The Blues Brothers apparently!) battling against aliens and the embodiment of evil that seems like an awesome idea!

15: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Phoenix Wright: Justice For All- Nintendo DS

One day I decided to check out the DS games at EB Games in Charlottetown to see what bargains I could find and there I saw it. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations. I have always wondered if the Ace Attorney series was any good and seeing how this game was only $20, I couldn’t pass it up. And I’m really glad I didn’t. The Ace Attorney series quickly became one of my all time favorite franchises with its quirky sense of humor and memorably over the top characters. I quickly picked Apollo Justice soon afterward and pick up Edgeworth’s spin-off game a month after it launched. Sadly, it seems that no matter how many I times I look, I can’t seem to find the first two games in the series anywhere, except eBay but they’re super expensive. Hopefully I’ll find them eventually because I could really use a return to the courtroom.

14: Star Fox- Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Do a barrel roll! Yeah. I never played Star Fox. So shoot me! Out of the sky! Ha. Ha. See what I did there? What can I say. Shmups are cool and so are flying games so why not mix them together? Throw in some funny and annoying talking animals and you’ve got something interesting.

13: TMNT IV: Turtles in Time- Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Arcade

Ninja Turtles plus time travel equals win! But seriously, as an old school Turtles fan, this game looks amazing! Not only does it sport some improved combat mechanics from the original Turtles arcade game (like being able to throw Foot Soldiers into the screen! Fourth wall, consider yourself broken) but also has some great graphics for the time and hosts a much wider variety of classic TMNT villains. Of course fans were given characters like Shredder, Krang, Baxter Stockman and Bebop and Rocksteady but other fan favorites like LeatherHead, Slash and The Rat King were also added. I thought about downloading Re-Shelled but that would be cheating and it looks like a completely different game, not too mention stupid.

12: Lunar: Silver Star Story- Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn, PC, Game Boy Advanced

This is another game that peeked my interest through the pages of PSM. I remember reading all of positive reviews and looking the stunning anime artwork and just thinking what an epic game this must be. Not too mention that I was in the middle of my love affair with Final Fantasy VII at the time and I was starting to get into RPGs. My friends who did get to play the Sega Saturn version told me it was really good but I couldn’t find it. Recently I became interested in the series again after seeing the boat song clip on Youtube. Soon after I found a copy of Lunar Dragon Song at the EB Games in Charlottetown. It sucked. Royally. But I am still willing to give Silver Star Story another chance, even if that piece of crap Dragon Song tainted my perception of the series.

11: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time- Nintendo 64 and coming soon to the Nintendo 3DS

So guess who didn’t play Ocarina of Time and has thumbs? This guy! I mean seriously. Not playing Ocarina of Time is like one of gaming’s Cardinal Sins isn’t it? In my defense, I didn’t have an N64 growing up, so I kind of missed out on it. But I did play Majora’s Mask at a friend’s place every lunch hour for about a month when I was in the ninth grade and really enjoyed it. Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll be able to afford a 3DS and I can play the upcoming remake.

The End?

No. No it's not.
