5 Hit Points: Tim Jones (Aliens vs. Predator)

Tim Jones, RebellionAnyone with any geek cred can quote the Aliens and Predator films (but not Aliens vs. Predator -- that'd be embarrassing). But it takes a special kind of nerd to answer our alien-related questions. Can Rebellion's Tim Jones, project lead on the recently released shooter Aliens vs. Predator, tackle our 5 Hit Points quiz -- and survive?

(Edit: Forgot to mention...special thanks to our own Michael Donahoe for coming up with the questions for this edition of 5HP!)

1. Bill Paxton is no stranger to Aliens or Predators -- and fan-made arcade games. What type of arcade game did a fan build to celebrate the actor's cinematic career?

Tim Jones: [Laughs] Whoa...that is obscure. Well, I don't know the answer, but guessing at it...the first thing that comes to mind is a light-gun shooter. I don't know why. I could imagine him shooting at aliens and vampires.

Bitmob: Sorry, it's pinball. Bill Paxton Pinball.

TJ: Oh, pinball. Well that makes sense....

Points: 0; Hits: 1

Bill Paxton Pinball

2. A lot of different publishers and developers have made Aliens games, including a popular RPG maker. Name that company who made an MSX game based off the movie.

TJ: Whoa, I should know this. An MSX game? Is it the same game that was on the Commodore 64?

Bitmob: No. This game is a platformer, and the C64 game had a bit of everything in it.

TJ: Oh yeah, the Commodore 64 one was an awesome game. But I could never get beyond the third screen. Is it Bioware?

Bitmob: Square.

TJ: Really...huh. I need to seek that out.

Points: 0; Hits: 2

3. The Aliens in Aliens are pretty ugly. The aliens in Mass Effect, however, are pretty sexy. Fox News thought so, too, when they covered the game's sex scene. What risqué nickname did they give to the Xbox 360 over the Mass Effect controversy?

TJ: Was it the Sexbox 360?

Bitmob: Sexbox, yup!

Points: 1; Hits: 2

4. Sega published Aliens vs. Predator, which isn't surprising since Sega also brought out an alien -- not the license -- beat-em-up game in the '80s. Can you name it?

TJ: The one that first popped into my mind was the Aliens vs. Predator side-scolling beat-em-up that Capcom brought out -- which was awesome, by the way.

Bitmob: It isn't a licensed Alien game, but it does have "alien" in the title.

TJ: I give up.

Bitmob: Alien Storm.

TJ: Fuck, yes...of course!

Points: 1; Hits: 3

5. Almost every sci-fi video game has stolen something from Aliens, but what recent game series in particular practically pilfered the whole movie?

TJ: Modern Warfare, for sure. [Laughs] The opening level -- they quote like every line. It's all like, "Watch those corners!"...all that kind of stuff. And Halo obviously takes a lot from it.

Bitmob: We'll give that to you. We were looking for Halo.

TJ: Modern Warfare was pretty shameless, too. We tried to be pretty tough about not doing over quotes and references from the movies, particularly because so many games do it all the time.

Points: 2; Hits: 3

Final Score: 2 Points

Eh, that's not that great, Tim, but we suppose you could've done worse. On a scale of Burke to Ripley, we give you a Spunkmeyer.

I think it might amuse everyone to know that I once confessed to the Bitmob staff that I never saw Alien. This turned into an email chain of over 40 responses on why I sucked.

@Mike we obviously need a stricter screening process here at Bitmob. :-)

@Mike What I don't get is how you haven't seen it. It's not just choosing not to watch it; it's more a case of actively avoiding it, since that movie seems to always be on some cable network. Lame!

In other news, I need to track down Bill Paxton Pinball!

@Mike Alien and Aliens are awesome. What is wrong with you.

I'm here in solidarity with Mike. I have not seen the Alien movies either and am not sure if I plan to. I just don't like to watch scary movies, and I really don't care if people make fun of me about that. Worse yet, I have a degree in film. I've seen the first Predator movie if that means anything. I believe it was on TV.

@Mike Now you get to find out how long the comment chain will get.

@Mike @Alejandro You should watch "Alien." It's a great work on creating suspense and tension, and it still holds up. Alejandro, as a film student, you must watch it.

I wonder...should we make a post about embarrassing moments of popular or gaming culture that the Bitmob staff may have missed?

I saw about 2 minutes of Alien once, when I was 5. My parents were watching it, and I saw the TV through the kitchen. It was the stomach busting scene. I was pretty much scarred. I avoided the film ever since. Not only that.

@Alejandro Thanks for the support!

@Mike -- words cannot describe how badly you suck for not seeing one of the best sci-fi movies of all time... /facepalm

@Jason I've never played Halo! I'm not really embarrassed about that though because I've purposefully avoided it.

Missing Alien is way worse than missing Halo.

Also, funny enough, I watched Aliens last night again for the umpteenth time because my friend who was over never saw it before. Believe me, I gave him just as much shit as we're giving Mike here. Maybe more, actually. Aliens > Alien.

Come E3, Mike, we're strapping you in a chair Clockwork Orange-style and forcing you to watch every second without blinking.

Or have you not seen Clockwork Orange either?

@Shoe Aliens is better than Alien? Oh, my oh my. Aliens, while fun and suspenseful, is junk food compared to the beef bourguignon that is Alien. It's one of the best examples of suspense and horror in the past three decades.

@Mike I've never played God of War. I don't care for action games that much.

@Shoe @Jason I have to agree with Jason on this one. While I love the bombast of a xenomorphic massacre as much as the next guy, I feel that Aliens' tone is less cohesive. It has a slight camp to it. Alien is so dark and moody -- really great atmosphere and very serious.

In the end though, the 1982 version of The Thing trumps them both.

@Mike Would you kindly state your stance on Blade Runner as well? We need to get all of your secrets out.

@Jasmine Yeah, Yeah. I didn't like Blade Runner. Even my friends give me crap on that one.

Alien is way better than Aliens, The Thing is better than Aliens, Blade Runner is a work of art, and the Matrix Trilogy needs more appreciation!!!

And great questions!
