Wait, what's going on here? What happened to the annual summer gaming drought? All of a sudden, just in the month of June, I've amassed a backlog of games I need to get my hands on and play. That's my November tradition, dammit!

Infamous, Prototype, Ghostbusters, and Red Faction: Guerrilla have all popped onto my radar in a big way. I followed one friend's adventure in nabbing Ghostbusters over Twitter. Jason Wilson turned me on to Guerrilla's sledgehammer-happy ways (and Area 5's Matt Chandronait recommended it first out of the four). My buds on the Player One Podcast can't stop talking about Infamous.

So how come when I finally got my hands on one of these games on Friday -- not working in an editorial office means these games aren't so readily available (I know...boo-hoo) -- a day later I put it aside?

Not only that, I even told my girlfriend on Friday that I planned to play Infamous, which Shoe lent to me, late into each night. So, naturally, I stayed up till 2 or 3 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday playing...Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link on my Wii!?

I started off well, turning on Infamous as soon as I got it. And I liked it just fine, but I think the hype had me expecting too much. By most accounts, friends and colleagues declared Infamous the winner in the open-world, superhero-y game showdown versus Prototype. And hearing I love Sly Cooper (which comes from the same developer as Infamous), people assured me Infamous would blow me away.

Like I said, it's good, but I wanted it to grab me instantly. Instead, I died a little too often, resulting in frustrating restarts. I kept having problems with the camera, and only now do I feel comfortable with it (vertical controls inverted, horizontal controls normal). Finally, at least early on, I wasn't finding Cole to feel all that super. I loved scaling up buildings, but his attacks themselves felt ineffective against even low-level enemies.

Taking a break from that, I asked my girlfriend what she wanted to play, and somehow we came up with Bubble Bobble on the Virtual Console. 100 levels later, we had our fill of saccharine entertainment, at which point I decided to spent my last $5, and Zelda 2 was the game.

And so it was Zelda 2 that dominated my Saturday and Sunday nights, as I played deep into each morning. It's been years since I've played the game, but it immediately sucked me in, be it from its hypnotic over-world music (arguably the best ever), the simple yet deep block-and-strike combat, or the bizarre conversations you have with the townsfolk. Also appreciated: It doesn't take a lot of time to make good progress and stumble upon numerous secrets.

So what led to my Zelda furlough, while Infamous anxiously waited? Perhaps I just needed a palate cleanser -- after seeing so many high-def games at E3, my eyes probably begged for that 8-bit relief. Or maybe I just needed something familiar as I worked on big plans for the end of the summer. But the old-school charms remind me of how my former roommate, Shane Bettenhausen, would replay this game every year or two, and I may have to start a similar tradition.

Everything got straightened out -- so to speak -- by the end. I got back into Infamous last night and enjoyed it a lot more. My expectations were in check, I knew what I had to do more instinctively, and I had a lot of fun just collecting blast shards and handling the occasional mission.

Did too much word-of-mouth hype set me up for disappointment initially? I don't know, but I'm glad I'm past that. And it's a good thing, since I still have a lot of games to check out. Hell, I'm hearing great things about Tiger Woods 10, and The Bigs 2 comes out next week.

Sometimes the hardest part of this hobby is simply catching a break.

So I can trade you Bionic Commando for Infamous now? Good.

I feel like I'm drowning in games right now -- between the new games like Red Faction and old games like Heroes of Might and Magic (Steam sale = too many purchases for me), I can't remember a summer that I've had so many games to play.

I've been having a hard time getting through Okami; It's not that I have a problem with the game, but I can't get motivated to play it, and when I do, I suddenly lose interest a half-hour after. I need to find me a palette cleanser...

I really don't know what people see in Infamous. I really wanted to like the game, but I got too overwhelmed by its flaws. I think many of the game's fans are pretending to like it, just to confuse me.;)

Haha. Like conspiracy theories much, Michael? How much have you played of it? Like I said, I turned a corner with it after I knew what it was; it was just all those darn high expectations that gave me the initial letdown. Here's hoping it's good the rest of the way.

"I am error" is one of the best mistranslations ever. Man, I need some more money, but I've been thinking about downloading Zelda II and A Link to the Past (some bastard stole my copy), so I can play them again. The original Zelda is still pretty fun too--just played that a month ago.

Oh, and Tiger Woods is surprisingly fun, and I'm not even a golf fan. It shows how much of a joke Wii Sports' golf game is.

You know, as deep as my backlog may be, why is it that I spent half an hour the other night beating Jaws on NES? I still have yet to play any of the new release games you've mentioned here Greg.

Yea man, you die a lot at first in inFamous. Level up your health asap before you do anything else. It will save you a lot of frustration.

Greg -- I believe I stopped playing a couple missions after fighting that boss-lady-thing; the one who had the hots for Cole. I got sick of navigating through all of the identical sewers. The other missions didn't cut my apparently high-standards, either. Oh well, if there's one thing Infamous proved, it's that the next Sly Cooper will control extremely well... and possibly take place in a obscurely sophisticated crap-river (sewer).:D

Not only is there the summer flood of game but I just got my first next-gen console (a 360) 2 weeks ago. Imagine all the catching up I have to do. Time to break out the poopsock.

Michael Keegan -- Frustrating? Pff... the game recommended I take my skills into the hard difficulty! I've never felt like such a man (take that God of War. No more telling me to try easy mode!).:)

I've been wondering in general how hype influences my experience of game. What thing that keeps popping in my mind is how I will watch a movie in the theater with high expectations due to hype and leave utterly disappointed. But then, when that same movie comes out on DVD (Blu-ray), I would give that movie a second chance and suddenly think that it was not as bad as I thought. Is it mood? Or perhaps hype causes you to expect one experience and when you play the game it does not meet the experience you were looking for?

The way I see it, hype is part of the marketing plan, and that plan is to make a product look better than it really is so almost everytime you will be disappointed if you get on the hype bandwagon. Which is why you shouldn't. Your expectations should come from information you read/listen/watch from sources you trust. In other words, read the previews, not the box quotes :P

Depending on the ebbs and flows of life there is nothing wrong with wanting a simplified gaming experience. Last night I didn't play Demigod, but instead played Boom Blox Bash Party. I just didn't feel like thinking about the complex strategy issues of Demigod. The same reason is why I enjoy the Pixel Junk games (monsters, eden) to MGS 4. MGS 4 is probably a great game, but sometimes a really good game that requires less of an investment is what I'm looking for.

@Tony: That's a good point, and I've come across that numerous times, like with the first Transformers, which I liked a lot more on second viewing on Blu-ray.
@Youcef: The thing is, I was believing all my friends' hype, who all seemed to adore it. Not like I blame them for loving a game, though.
@Dustin: Nice points!
@Derek: Awesome on Jaws! I love that game.

Yeah I guess my point doesn't really apply to people who were/are part of the press :P
