A title you won't find for Game Of The Year: Metroid: Other M

I have to say. 2010 had some great games across all platforms and in every genre.  The problem is? That is nothing new.  All the past years and things to look for to will continue this trend.  For me though, I have to say, I really looked forward to this game when it came out.  Yes, Metorid: Other M was the one game I just had to have.  Preordered and all, this game had kept my interest ever since it was announced at E3. Tecmo and Nintendo? That sounded good and bad but you know what? It worked and this is why.

Metroid: Other M had something that both companies needed to not only improve their developement but something that would speak to hardcore gamers. Problem was that a lot of the HC crowd didn't get it due to the annoyances they believe the game has shown. The story, voice acting, the unlocking abilities and the main fault that they believe? It wasn't a high res Super Metroid.  Some people believed it to be lackluster and somewhat stale but this happened due to certain opinionated reviews and some expectations that wasn't met.  Although Nintendo and Tecmo didn't succeed in that part, there is one thing that it is hard to argue: It got people to see what happens when the gameplay mechanic truly stands out.

Who would of known that Tecmo itself, would get the "action" completely right.  For a company who has a hard time with Ninja Gaiden playing the way it should and not fighting the camera and difficulty, it has made a foundation on how their action games should play now.  After working on Metroid, Tecmo should now have a idea how Ryu should play and control.  Metroid Other M had me at hello when I controlled Samus.  Though the 2D/3D design level worked perfectly, it had my attention every night and every chance I got to play it.  From the autotargeting to the auto defense roll out, it all made sense with the simplicity.  Stylish but simple. Not button combo heaviness that a lot of action games do, but something this simple is what the part of the game stand out.

I had no problem with the story because this is one of the things I truly longed for the series.  Prime and the heldhands did a superb job with what they had produce and release.  Retro showed ho Action FPS should be developed. The handhelds kept that old school Metroid love alive.  Other M for me introduce something deeper with depth and although people growned at the voice acting and the characters, I felt a bettrer sense of Samus.  I mean, we all have are interpertation of who Samus really is, it felt good to see and eperience something the creator see who Samus is from his one perspective.  We can't always keep her in isolation forever.

The freshness is there.  That was what I wanted and hope that Nintendo and Tecmo can improve on that if they decide to bring out a new one.  My complaints from the game was the energy charging (which wasn't bad but it didn't work when it should) and the ability unlock.  They could keep that but do it right.  For example, if you unlock missles, there should be new and inventive missle add on or missles itself.  A homing bomb missle or something that could make it combo heavy for a bit or used for new kills which could still show that simple beautiful style and not interrupt the flow.

So there you have it. It's just my opinion but I love Metroid: Other M because it got a lot right and it kept me playing after I beat it.  It tried something new and although it didn't get it right this time, it set a foundation to get things right next.  In fact, I'm about to play it now.

I still kind of want to play this game despite all the negative reviews. My interest was peaked, I just never got a chance to pick it up. I'll have to get it cheap sometime next year and give it a chance.

There were simply too many good games released this year for Metroid to make its case for GOTY, but I will say that it's one of the most underrated games of the year.  It really seems to come down to how you approach the unusual-for-a-Metroid-game story, but if you embrace the change of pace, Other M is a solid game.
