E3 2011: Best of Nintendo -- Super Mario

What is it?

Super Mario Galaxy-style 3D gameplay (without the planetoids or space-faring travel) meets pop-out-the-screen 3D graphics to form the plumber's latest adventure.

Why is it cool?

When a new Mario platformer comes out, it's tough for any game to compete with it. Those Nintendo developers have the precision controls, clever level designs, and all-around cuteness nailed for this series. Super Mario for the 3DS is a bit slower-paced, and the stages are a little more straight-forward and confined, but the precision? The cleverness? The damn cuteness? All there. It's still classic Mario, and nothing else from Nintendo -- not Zelda, not Star Fox, and certainly not Luigi -- can beat that.

The moment the crowd went wild

Four things made the audience cheer out loud during Nintendo's E3 press conference: Watching the Wii U in action, hearing that Smash Bros. is coming to the 3DS and Wii U, and seeing two big comebacks: the other Bro. returning to Luigi's Mansion 2 and the Tanooki Suit. Yes, something as simple as Mario taking that ratty old raccoon outfit out of the attic can make grown gamers cry.

From the demos so far, Tanooki 2.0 isn't offering the power of flight (now everyone will cry for a different reason). But it still does a good job of terrorizing Goombas with its deadly tail swipe. And yes, Mario looks plump and adorable in it.

At least you can hover with the Tanooki tail, or so it seems. It also looks like the two-hits-and-you’re-dead formula is back, as I saw a smaller, chubbier Mario running around in the trailer. Did you get to play it, Shoe?

I miss the Tanooki suit. Lol. It was one of the cooler Mario transformations in the series.

Yup! You can float a little with it.

False. The best Nintendo game at E3 is Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.

"But Chase, those titles were barely announced, much less shown," you might say.

My response: "It's Smash Bros. SMASH BROS.!"

I thought it was funny how SSB got a bigger pop in the conference than most of the titles the characters are actually coming from and almost even the Wii U. I am curious how Nintendo will go about it. The pickings for new characters are a lot slimmer than before unless Nintendo really goes out for guest characters.

Calling it right now: Prof Layton

I gotta agree with Shoe. Mario Bros. 3D felt great. I was also a big fan of Luigi's Mansion 2. Honestly, all of Nintendo's first party titles for the 3DS look great.

But Mike...Smash Bros!

I'll be more excited when I see a logo or something for Smash Bros. :)

I didn't understand what all the fuss was over the original Luigi's Mansion. I don't think half the fans would care if it came from some other developer/publisher, starring an equally cute but unknown character! :)

But you can say that about the majority of games out there.

Some games, I agree, but definitely not the majority. I don't care that Call of Duty is from Activision, for example, or who the characters are. I like the gameplay, pure and simple. Mario platformers would be fantastic even if you replaced him with Crash Bandicoot.

I guess I just didn't get Luigi's Mansion.
