Feeling lonely in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

I've written before on the influence that Halo: Combat Evolved had on my experience as a gamer, so when Microsoft announced a remake, I was thrilled. I imagined revisiting the plot mysteries of the original release with all of the gameplay improvements of Halo: Reach

Upon loading the game, I made an extremely disappointing discovery: Like the first titles in the series, co-op in the campaign was again limited to only two players.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

Some of my greatest gaming memories have me and my best friends playing through Halo on increasingly harder difficulty settings. While the first two titles allowed two players at a time, Halo 3 (and the follow-up, ODST) offered four-player co-op though system link or Xbox Live. This completely changed the campaign for the better. We recklessly raced around in Warthogs with two players driving and the other two manning the chainguns behind them. When the time came to really whoop some Covenant ass, we’d get everyone to jump into a Scorpion.

We even had fun when bad things happened. One time, an invisible Elite shanked the player who thought it was a good idea to run ahead of the group on Legendary difficulty. The rest of us just rolled around the floor and laughed at him.

The worst part about the lack of four-player cooperative play is that I can't think of a good reason for 343 Industries to not include it. Maybe the Xbox 360 can't handle it with the new graphics engine? Give us the option to use lower settings then. One of the developers told me that they literally ported the game engine from the original so that Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary would feel exactly the same. But would giving us the ability to play with four people detract from the mechanics of the first release?

While I appreciate the fact that local cooperative play is still an option, I will miss the group experiences of the past. Since the series added the abilty to enjoy the story with four people at a time, I have felt that Halo is almost like Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64: It felt best when I had a group to enjoy it with. Hopefully, others will feel the same way, and eventually 343 Industries will enable four-player co-op though downloadable content.

Why did my comment get deleted? There was not four-player co-op in the original Halo. You are misremembering it.

I hate to say it, but this article was pointless.  Halo never had 4 player co-op and if they added it it would have messed up the balance of the whole game.  Also, to think that they will add 4 player via DLC is a joke.  I have been a fan of this site since Dan came over.  However, I have never commented on anything till now due to this being the worst post I have every seen on BITMOB.

I apologize for thr inaccuracy, and I hope this won't stop you from being a fan of the site. Like I mentioned in another comment, it was a major slip up in my memory that I should've taken the time to verify.

That's an interesting point about balance though. Don't you think they could simply have scaled up the damage the AI could take?

I get that articles have a very short shelf-life on the internet, but still… Kyle? Response? It seems like you could do the minimum amount of research before posting a featured article based on inaccurate information, especially one so indignant.

You're right, and I'm sorry that I didn't respond to your first comment. Relying on my memory of gameplay from ten years ago was just stupid, and I appreciate you commenting with the facts to prove me wrong.

Uhh... have great memories of playing 4-player splitscreen multiplayer in the original Halo, but 4 player co-op? I don't think that came down the pipe until what, Halo 3?

It's ok, sometimes my memories get fuzzy too ;)

Yeah, I must've had my memories run together of playing local versus in Halo 1 and 2 and playing through co-op in Halo 3. It doesn't help that we played system link for all of them -_-

Thanks for understanding, it won't happen in the future!

For anyone confused by the comments above: I published this story a few days ago with the inaccurate claim that the first Halo featured four-player co-op in the campaign. I was obviously wrong, and the inaccuracy made the article pointless.

I've since republished the piece with my real intent emphasized. We've seen Halo titles with four players, and they're fun. I feel that it wouldn't have been detrimental for 343 Industries to update the campaign in Anniversary to allow for a similar experience with the classic levels of Combat Evolved.

I'm sorry that I made such an epic fail with the original version of the story, and hope that it doesn't affect your appreciation of the great work done here at Bitmob.

Don't worry. I think I got the gist of what you were trying to say. Everything's more fun with four people.

I appreciate the transparency, Kyle. We all make mistakes.

I was also gutted to find that there was no 4 local player co-op, but worse yet, NO 4 player competitive split screen. Kill me now!

HORRIBLE! That's one of the seven deadly sins! Someone needs to bring back the full local multiplayer functions to give people the true Halo experience.

Screen looking just added to the experience, am I right? ^_^

I'm offended! Are you insinuating that I engaged in the abhorrent practice of screen-cheating? :p

Whoa. Halo Anniversary got right of 4 player competitive split screen? I thought 343 was using the same engine, why couldn't they do this? The days of screen-cheating are slowly being forgotten.
