Check Her Stance: Finally a Female Pokemon Trainer Stands on Her Own Two Feet

Editor's note: Meghan's holding out for a hero -- a female Pokemon trainer without an unfortunate foot disorder. And to celebrate finally finding one, she looks back at the sad history of wimpy gal poke-trainers through the ages. -Demian

A clip from Japan's more-than-slightly creepy Pokemon Sunday talk show recently revealed some new details about Pokemon Black and White, and my hands-down favorite news was -- holy metatarsus varus, Zubat, er, Batman -- a lead female trainer who wasn't standing pigeon-toed and didn't look like a slight breeze would knock her over!

The female trainer concept art for Pokemon Black & White. Hooray, she's
not pigeon-toed and looks capable! Her amount of confidence
must be directly proportional to her hair size.

Why is that significant? Many, many, many women in Japan walk or stand pigeon-toed often. Opinions conflict on why this is (some insist it's because they sit in seiza all the time and thus permanently damage their knees, ankles, and lower body alignment), but the largest consensus I've found on the Internet is this:

The real answer is that it is a holdover from the days when people still wore kimono. If you walk normally while wearing one, the kimono tends to comes open so for modesty people began walking pigeon-toed. Even though people no longer wear kimono, a shuffling walk with one's feet turned inward is still considered modest, feminine, and even cute. [The Quirky Japan Homepage]

I don't think I'd be excited about this if I hadn't felt like every other female trainer in HeartGold was ridiculously pigeon-toed. Ms. HeartGold looks like she's in a constant state of tripping over something, perhaps a Squirtle.

Female trainers throughout the Pokemon ages. From left to right, Gold/Silver/Crystal,
Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, Diamond/Pearl, FireRed/LeafGreen, HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In HeartGold/SoulSilver roughly 18 of the 41 female trainer sprites, or 40%, appear to be pigeon-toed (I'm embarrassed to admit I counted). Most of the remaining female trainers are doing something equally hyper effeminate, like jumping and tweaking one of their feet mid-step (which is a close cousin of the pigeon toe, I guess).

Trainer sprites from HeartGold and SoulSilver. Red circles = female sprites with incredible
pigeon-toeing. Yellow circles = female sprites without incredible pigeon-toeing.

I'm tired of seeing so many female characters (especially in Japanese games) represented in such a demure, passive light. Sure, a big draw of Pokemon is that it's supposed to be super adorable, but I want some female characters who won't burst into tears if a random leaf blows off a tree and hits them in the face -- a character who is strong and looks like she can withstand travelling in the world alone.

[Pictured right: Some of the worst pigeon-toed offenders from HG/SS. I have no idea how the top-left trainer or Team Rocket girl are standing like that AND defying gravity at the same time.]

I'll finish this post with a fun localization fact: The female trainers called "Lass" in the American versions are called ミニスカート (Mini-Skirt) in the Japanese version. There's also a similar reference in the Japanese Pokemon anime's opening song for the very first season, but that's a whole other blog post.

I never noticed the pigeon-toed epidemic in Pokemon, now I'll look for it in Japanese games! It has always bugged me when a female character's design seems to contradict what we're told about her. For example when a character is a fighter but looks like she belongs in a mall.

I wondered why Japanese women walked so weird when I was over there. I just chalked it up to cultural differences and got back to the arcades and beer-filled vending machines. Reading this, I can see the potential damage not only to any hopes for equality, but the physical well-being of the women themselves.

Also, it's completely kosher to bump into people over there. I stopped saying 'excuse me' after day 3.

This pigeon-toed phenomenon is interesting. I have never thought of this before, so I have questions that you may or may not have answers to: Are women that don't walk pigeon-toed considered less attractive in Japan, in general? Is walking "correctly" seen as a masculine trait?

Sorry, but I'm completely ignorant of this subject.

Thanks everyone for the comments.^_^v

@Rachel: Now that you see it, you won't be able to unsee it, which is why I think it's been bugging me a lot lately, lol.

@Nick: Don't apologize for asking questions! ^^ This is the kind of cultural stuff that even foreigners who live in Japan for a while don't fully understand the reasoning for (and I'm definitely not claiming to be an expert on this topic either—just speaking from experience). I don't think walking correctly is considered "masculine", or that a woman who does not walk pigeon-toed is considered "less attractive". From my experience, it seems that inward-pointing toes are an extra accent of cuteness. I'm trying to think of an American equivalent... but I can't. :/

That's cool but there's no excuse for those ridiculous jagged pockets sticking out from her cut-offs. ;)

Never noticed this before, but it also adds credence to my idea that the new games are suppose to take place in a region that resembles the US, (All other regions have been based on areas of Japan).

@Meghan, I would think the equivalent would be pony tails, or other ways people wear their hair.  But if you are looking for a foot one, it might be high-heels.

I found this fascinating.

Looking at the sprites, I also notice that most of the male characters seem to be doing something, whereas most of the female characters are just standing (or hopping/skipping in place, in the case of the mid-step).

Not nearly as prevalent, though.

As a resident of Japan I assure you the pigeon-toed thing is real, although it's merely one of many things Japanese women do to look cute. Also on the list: talk like little girls regardless of their actual age/weight, attach all manner of little charms and doohickeys to their mobile phones/handbags, and puffing out their cheeks when they get mad. It's pretty obnoxious.

American girls do all sort of weird crap to be "cute" nowadays -- at least the ones in somewhat alternative cultures do.

They cut their hair in to silly, uneven messes; only wear ballet flats (sometimes, yes, toes pointed in); wear ridiculous, over-sized glasses; ride color-coded bicycles (wtf?); chop apart clothes until they are basically unwearable, layer them, and then tell people they make their own clothes; think they are all sexy librarians; tell you about some R&B/pop singer that they like ironically (but actually like); like painting or collage but have no talent at it...I could go on.

The point is that it's sad that it's so hard for women to be individuals. Guys have it a lot easier because they don't have to adopt some sort of weird affectation to get noticed. It's kind of bullshit.

being individual doesnt mean being a skank.thats what the girl is.how would anyone like if the boy were in those jorts to attract attention?

Labeling a girl that doesn't dress to your personal tastes or standards as a 'skank'. *eyeroll*
So sexist.

@James: Do you happen to live in Williamsburg, NY? ; )

All kidding aside, I understand what you mean. It's kind of difficult to struggle for individuality in the modern world, where pretty much everything's categorized and sold to people as manufactured identities. In some cultural scenes, like you mentioned, its actually just as hard for guys as it is for girls. I hate "scenes."

@Meghan: Your article was both fun and interesting to read. I liked how it links a particular aspect of games to a wider cultural phenomenon. Good work!

@James: That's not trying to be cute, that's being a hipster.

It's nice to see that they are dropping (well, for the female avatar at least) the incredible pigeon-toeing. Sadly, they are now trying to be edgy and cool with big hair, leather jacket and really short shorts. I wonder how much it is a sign of them trying to aim for a more mature audience?

Much like the other people commenting, I didn't notice that so many female Pokemon trainers stood like this until you pointed it out. I completely agree.

@Bruno I think with the outfit  this may be a current fashion trend in Japan.  This fashion site showed a lot of girls walking around in demin skirts/pants and jackets. http://www.fashioninjapan.com/streets/clothing_women_casual.html

... yes I did research for this comment. I agree though that the pockets sticking out is cheesy.
As for the article great observation Meghan.

@Bruno: A mature audience, or a revival of 80s fashion, right? :P Actually I can identify with her over-volumized hair—that's pretty much what mine does IRL everyday lol.

Not that it really matters, but I don't think those are pockets sticking out of her shorts. (http://www.siliconera.com/2010/05/12/pokemon-black-white-starters-and-trainers-revealed/). I think they're attached on the outside or something, which might even be stranger and more stupid-looking than if they were pockets. While I was searching for that image, I found that fanart of the new trainer has pretty much taken already taken away the charisma of the official art. D: (http://www.thegamingvault.com/2010/05/pokemon-black-and-white-starters-and-trainers-revealed/)

Thanks everyone for the comments and really interesting discussion. I honestly thought people were going to think this was a really dumb article when I wrote it. ^^

This opened my eyes. I never fully noticed the pigeon-toeing until this. Which is why I'm WAY more excited about this game's female protagonist. Not only does she look like she could kick some ass if she had to, she looks pretty fashion forward as well! Because frankly, I was tired of the female looking like she was going to Sunday school instead of going on an intrepid adventure. And it's just a cute outfit :P I feel like older girls (16+) could relate to her more. She exudes confidence which sends out a GREAT message to girl fans, don't be pigeon-toed go out and kick ass! But that's just me :)

Great message to girl fans? I was starting to get hopeful when I heard that Black and White were coming out. Then one day I took a good look at the female trainer, Hilda. With the over the top crazy hair and sporting short-shorts I wouldn´t be caught dead wearing. Sunday school? The last time I was forced to go to sunday school none of the girls were wearing latex-tight shorts and mini skirts(May, Kriss, Leaf and Dawn). Anywho- I´ll weep with joy the day the female trainer is allowed to wear pants.

cute??!u mean indecent n yucky.girls look so bad in those, yet they insist on wearing those, really illogical.how any pokemon can respect n obey such a trainer is incomprehensible.even misty looked better,n shes a water pokemon trainer/tomboy

You are extremely sexist. Stop trying to shame and insult girls for what the choose to wear. Hilda has not been designed to be objectified nor is she overly sexy in a way to directly appeal to only male players, she's just wearing shorts. Grow up and get over it.

i have no idea about what pigeon toe,but all i know is she looks disgracefully indecent, the worst character created so far.especially when contrasted against the way overdressed boy.are they even supposed to be transversing the same pokeworld?

Default_picture

You might think you're being ultra feminist here, fabrizzo. But all you're actually doing is 'slut shaming', which is awful. This girl, Hilda, is not posed provocatively, she's not being objectified, all she's doing is wearing short-shorts and owning them, I might add!
She's a sassy character and it's well in line with her personality to dress a little sexy. You need to seriously re-examin your perspective if you're going to label ever girl that wears a crop-top or shorts as 'discracefully indeasent' or a 'skank'.
