Making the most of opportunities.

On September 23rd 2009, I received an email from Sony inviting me to be involved in a public Beta test  – please keep in mind I’ve never tested anything in my life!

A dream come true?

Absolutely!

So during the past week, I’ve been logging on and doing my best to find and report any faults. Writing on the PSN forum has also been a first time experience as I discover a wealth of knowledge and a range of interesting people in the forums.

Yet, one question still burns in the back of my mind – how much of the game can I discuss and when can I discuss them?

I’m eager to share with everyone my experiences and thoughts about the game and about being involved in a public beta test.

For some of you in the community, you may already be veterans at this aspect. If so, any hints or advice over how I should approach the experience?

And whilst I’m reflecting over the issue of making the most of opportunities, my friend brought up an interesting question. Why doesn’t DICE turn the downloadable Battlefield 43 into something larger?

I believe DICE were “impressed” with the reception when they released the B43 download. With such a great start one would think they’d continue to keep the ball rolling.

My mate and I have grown fond of B43. We’ve never played any Battlefield games before and to find ourselves returning to this three map and one air-to-air supremacy game over and over again has left us thinking – It’s great fun, why don’t they make a full game?

The fact that there is still a reasonable number of individuals playing on the server would imply an opportunity to build an alternative product (in the same lines as Activision has with COD:WAW and MW) to their next release: Battlefield 2.

DICE, in my eyes, are doing pretty darn well with creating games that people like to play. Just look at Battlefield heroes for the PC. The last time I read about it, it was reaching the 2 million mark.

That’s impressive!

Does DICE have any plans beyond releasing a PC port?

I understand Battlefield 2 is preparing to take centre stage, but with B43 doing so well as the “support band” why not let it have its own centre stage?

I have found it difficult to comprehend why I do not see DICE taking larger measures to offer a fully realised B43 with more maps and weapons as DLC.

Surely they realise the audience is waiting for an encore from this small download?

All I can say is, I’d pay for more B43 expansion. Even if they don’t go down that road, patching up to polish the game would certainly keep the fans happy.

So DICE, if you are listening – I think B43 is a great opportunity begging to be explored.

On the PC Battlefield Heroes looks awesome. I wish it was on the consoles cause it reminds me of COD2, but better in most ways. Congrats on the Mag Beta

thanks Toby :D

I also wish Battlefield heroes was on the console - maybe we could start a petition?

Christopher - I know it's sometimes easy to miss when you're excited about being picked for a beta, but do you recall having to accept the terms of an agreement while you signed up?

Beta tests can vary, but a lot of them include clauses when you sign up that state that you are not allowed to discuss game features with people who are not also in the beta program while you are participating in the test. This is usually referred to as a NDA (non disclosure agreement.) Sometimes these agreements expire after a certain date, and then you are free to share as much information as possible.

Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing if this particular beta test had any restrictions or not. It's something you may have to go back and check yourself. If they didn't force you to agree to any specific terms, I'd say you should feel free to tell us as much as you want.

I am very jealous that you got into the MAG Beta! I am disgustingly disappointed about how we buy these download only games - such as Battlefield or Fat Princess - and they developers do very little to fix the problems. Is that not supposed to be the point of it being a DL only game?

I expect a full post of MAG! And that is a threat!!! :o

I think why DICE isn't doing any updates to BF'43 is because they're working on Bad Company 2. But that's cool you got into the beta!

Meh, already got into the first 2 MAG betas, and now I'm in the 3rd beta. lol

I think Battlefield 1943 just didn't click for me. I felt unimpressed after the demo and it never had any fun for me. Maybe because I sucked. I dunno.

@ everyone,

sorry it took so long to reply, been so busy reading other peoples post I never got around to checking my own.

Thank you for all your comments :)

@ Jay, I'll check to see if i agreed to an NDA - maybe it was mentioned on the email.

@ Kevin that's great you were on the beta as well! let me know your thoughts about it sometime :) as for the B43 experience, it took me awhile to get into it simply because the movement felt "heavier" than COD and the iron sights and the general feel of firing the weapon felt sluggish. But after I got use to all the subtle changes in control and feel, I kinda ended up growing fond of it.

@Lance, I'll do my best to write a good perspective piece on it ;D I need to check to see if I agreed to any NDA stuff.

@ Cosmo, Do you think they'd work on B43 or something similar after Bad Company 2?
