Bitmob's Aaron Thomas and Greg Ford are joined by Atomic Gamer's Joe Dodson and former GameSpotter, Kristin Reilly, on this week's Mobcast.

The group hit on a number of topics, including: the days before achievements, sex and romance in games, their thoughts on strategy guides, gaming and religion, and their favorite game soundtracks of all time.

It's great getting to hear from Kristin! And hey T, Joe is also an ex-Spotter, remember? ;)

D'oh! Last week I emailed my question with the subject "Mobcast -- Discussion Question?." Shows how good I am at following instructions.

Glad you liked it Eduardo. I figured Joe would rather have me plug his current venture at Atomic Gamer rather than call him out as ex-GameSpot. I enjoyed having the two of them on - it reminds me of being back at the office. :)

Ugh, this is going to come off like a total ragenaut post so let me complement you as a host first Aaron. While I never really read anything from Gamespot back in the days when you were there, I think you're growing into an excellent regular host. I was a bit worried (especially during episode 34) about how the podcast was flowing with several of the music breaks. Having said that, I do like it when you include music when its part of the conversation (such as the music discussion or the few times the Plants vs Zombies theme came up). I also think your transitions are smooth, your cadence and tone are easy and professional, and your topics are fun to listen to even if they aren't totally unique. Okay, criticism time. I have never felt that there has been a more irritating guest than Joe Dodson on the Mobcast. To preface this, I haven't read any of Joe's writings either in he past or currently. As far as I know, he could be a wonderful and hilarious writer. I also think his topic suggestion was interesting before he proceeded to take all of the air out of it. I think my largest problem with Joe's appearance is that he struck me as a guy who thinks he's really funny and outrageous while being neither. Joe came off as irritating every chance he tried to be funny. For example, Joe's point during the religion debate was almost poignant until he decides to go for laughs by haphazardly trivializing anyone who ever has a moral conflict with a form of entertainment media by saying "playing 3D Sonic games are against my religion". If you read this Joe, I think you're doing yourself a disservice by trying to talk about games with a zany point of view (at least on this podcast). Your humor came off as, at best, forced. I'd like to hear you come on again at some point talking in a more earnest fashion. However if that's just how you are all the time then maybe you should try to hold back on your "wacky-ness". It's irritating and not your best suit if the brief flashes of interesting discussion you had when being serious are to be believed. On a different note, I have a few favorite soundtracks to enter into the podcast's conversation. Jet Set Radio had an amazing soundtrack back on the Dreamcast. The soundtrack really gave Jet Set Radio an amazing energy that hasn't ever been matched. To this day, Jet Set Radio's soundtrack remains one of the most defining elements to any game I've ever played. I'm also rather partial to Final Fantasy VI's music. FF VI has one of the best overworld themes in any RPG, and the opera scene/score was so dramatically different from anything happening on console music at the time. I don't particularly enjoy most Square soundtracks, but Final Fantasy VI breadth of ground the soundtrack covers really solidifies it as one my favorites.

Joe was great, I don't care what anyone else says. He seems naturally funny and I don't think he should change that about himself. Really enjoyed the podcast but the music segment.. I don't think you had to play the full song each time, a sample would of worked I think. Also, Greg you had the chance to pimp Playerone Podcast at the end and you didn't. >:( You should be proud of that podcast and should at least have given it a plug! Keep up the great work. Hopefully Shu can make time for some of the future shows.

As I ranted about uniporn, this occurred to me: the more you struggle with jokes before a podcast, the less you struggle with them during it.

I was really surprised the topic of religon and morality was handled so well in the podcast. Many times when these topics are brought up, they are overly condemned by believers, for the sake of this argument when I say believers I am mainly tallking about the big three Abrahamic religons, who are ill informed on the gaming. On the flip side, those who aren't believers comdemn the whole group of those who do for being closed minded. Both sides have their points but as a Roman Catholic who has been gaming since the days of Pong, I find it short-sighted that both sides view the other through hate colored glasses. The majority of Catholics aren't right wing Jack Thompsons nor are most gamers left wing elitists or an Eric Harris/Dylan Klebold in the making. It's sad that the majority is so marginialized by an extreme minority. Back to this specific community question though. The way the community member phrased the question, I don't think it's fair to make a judgement without playing the game or seeing the movie. If you're worried about enriching something you don't morally agree with, you can rent the game or movie, or wait until a review from a viable source comes out. For instance I won't buy the game Shadow Complex for more then four dollars because I don't agree with Orson Scott Card's extreme hatred of homosexuals (Card is the writer of the books the game is based on). Nor will I but the Twilight books because I am offened by the author's charitable donations to anti-homosexual groups, her glamorizing of absuive relationships, sparkly vampires, and bad writing. With regards to Legion, I don't think it'll be any more profane then The Prophecy or Constantine was. Both just use the Book Of Revelations as a spring board into a story. I didn't find either morally offensive or denigrating to God or the church. The book "The Shack", the "Left Behind" Series and the "Babylon Rising" Series, all do the same thing, using the Bible as a source material to leap into a work of fiction. Having read Inferno, I feel the need to inform the reader that it wasn't written as a religous document. While a lot of our modern Christian imagery comes from Dante's Devine Comedy, Inferno is the first section of the whole of the Comdey, it is an allegorical piece that is as much a political commentary as it is a religous one. It's a work of fiction just like the aforementioned movies and books. Finally, the part about being offended. I've been close to being offended in games, and defintely have by music, movies and books, but it's never been because of their warping of the Bible. It's always been when the artist, author, or game has been insulting to the people who believe in a particular religon. I stopped listening to Marilyn Manson, not because I stopped liking the music, but because he's said a lot of very insulting things about Christians. I can understand disagreeing with the establishment of the church, but when you insult the entire group of believers, you're being just as hypocritical and ignorant as those you are against.
