News Blips:Â

EB Games accidently leaked some sweet Halo: Reach screenshots and then -- no surprise here -- quickly took them down. The pictures confirm rumors that the next game in the series will feature squad combat and take a page out of Call of Duty's playbook with unlockable perks (i.e. armor that grants special abilities). In other Halo news, Halo 3's "Mythic Map Pack 2" bundle, which features three Halo 3: ODST maps, drops February 2. [Shack News]
Players of Zynga games have managed to raise over $1.5 million for Haiti over the past five days. Zynga, the company behind such popular browser-based games as FarmVille and Mafia Wars, offered their players the chance to buy Haitian-themed items (white corn, a Haitian drum, etc.) in several different games, and gave all of the proceeds to the U.N World Food Program. FarmVille users are responsible for raising $1 million. Way to go, virtual farmers!Â
Sony is now accepting applications for the third annual Gamers in Real Life (G.I.R.L.) 2010 Scholarship. The focus of the program is to get more women involved and educated in the field of video game production and design. The winner of the scholarship will take home $10,000 to be put toward the tuition and educational expenses of a game-related degree. They'll also have the opportunity to take up a 10 week internship with Sony Online Entertainment. If we want to talk about fighting sexism in games, programs like this are a great start. Gizmodo reports that Sega will release the Ultimate Genesis emulator for the iPhone/iPod Touch sometime early February. The application will come with a pre-packed copy of Space Harrier 2, and will allow users to buy additional Genesis titles from within the emulator via the App Store's in-app purchasing system. Why didn't Sega just name this the Nomad 2? [Gizmodo]
