Origins of the Mortal Kombat theme song

Most people remember the Mortal Kombat theme from the motion picture adaptation of Mortal Kombat. However, very few gamers may remember that most of the song was originally part of a hip European dance song in the early 90s.

That’s right, the majority of the Mortal Kombat theme was actually stolen from a Eurobeat song by 2 Unlimited, called “Twilight Zone.”

The song was then remixed by The Immortals, a Belgian electronic band. They added in arcade sound effects, voice-overs and an infamous synthesizer melody.

No doubt, The Immortals must have been watching their backs, hoping that they wouldn’t get sued for using their own variation of a sample from 2 Unlimited. Thankfully, I haven’t heard of any lawsuits over copyright infringement.

Besides, I think most gamers would prefer to remember this as the Mortal Kombat theme. Everyone would probably like bloody fights more than some guys in a music video, who are spinning and waving their arms around.

This is blowing my mind. KMFDM's version of the Mortal Kombat theme is my go-to jam for studying, cleaning and when I want to impress passengers in my car.
