Sony's NGP: Now the PS Vita?

I woke up this morning to a friend's Tweet, alerting me on a rumored new name for Sony's NGP, its next handheld system. So...what do you guys think about the PS Vita?

It appears Games Pundit may have first sniffed this out, and unfortunately, with this being the middle of a holiday weekend, we won't be able to confirm anything with Sony (not that they'll do so anyways with the E3 2011 trade show just about a week away, when we'll learn more about their plans).

Vita, as in Latin for "life"? PlayStation Life? Don't love it, but can't say it's worse than "Wii" or "iPad".

That is horrible. Dear God, they can't be serious. Please let this be a photoshop job from someone playing a joke. Vita? Ugh! Sony, NO!!! What are you doing!?

Sure Vita works fine. Better than Wii or Xbox

Can we just call it the PSV?

PSV sounds kind of like a venereal disease, doesn't it?

I don't think it's that bad. Remember "Wii" and "Dreamcast" when you first heard those, before you got used to them?

Dreamcast actually sounds awesome.

Dreamcast did sound pretty sweet, like "Project Revolution". But I think the Wii proved that a console's name means very little. That is unless we believe that the Wii's wacky-sounding name actually helped Nintendo move units.

They could call it PS Pop Tarts, I'm buying it. As Dan mentioned, you get used to a name. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter.

Is it supposed to be [Vahy-tuh] or [Vit-uh]?

Or [Veet-uh]?

Agreed. Though maybe you'll say that about "Vita" in a few months. :)

I said the same about Nintendo Revolution, but I quickly got used to Wii after that.

I wouldn't mind if they put "saw" at the end. Then it would make an indirect reference to the vita-saw in Team Fortress 2. Oh well, I guess I'll live with PSVita.

I always wonder about these "leaks"... I wonder if it was Sony themselves, reading the forum boards and getting cheap market research.  The Internets have allowed companies to do focus groups on the cheap.  Focus groups that are not picked at random, mind you, but they are hearing from the heavy potential users of their next portable...

Oh, and I think the name stinks.  PSP was a great name.  This is a decidedly "not great" name.

They build all this brand equity in the PSx brand... PS2, PSP, PS3.. PSVITA..?  It doesn't work.

PSV? We haven't even had the PS4 yet!

They may skip 4.

Anyway, why couldn't this info come like the old days? On the back end of a VHS tape that wasn't recorded over?

Hahahaha....nice one, Matthew. :)

Biggest problem for me is that I keeping reading -- and wanting to say -- "Vista."

Then again I guess PSV is better then NGP. Seeing NGP being associated with 'No Games Portable'

This is what I think of when I see "Vita":

Keep in mind that nearly everyone believed the Move peripheral was going to be called Arc, and that turned out to be false. Vita might just be a project code name.
