Man when I read about the shooting mechanics in literally every review I read it devastated me. I was looking forward to this game so much. It was going to be amazing. A Yakuza game, plus a shooter, plus Zombies? How could it possibly go wrong! What I was purposefully ignoring was the simple fact that Japanese developers are infamous in their inability to make common sense decisions.
And this is a perfect example. They knew as well as we did that they were targeting a western audience with this Yakuza. The Yakuza series never sold well out west, and turning it into a shooter was clearly an attempt to cater more to us. You would think then that making sure you get the most important gameplay mecahnics in your game right would be #1 on the priorities list. Apparently, it wasn't. Leave it to Japanese devs to completely botch something as simple as shooting in a shooter.
Everything I have read about it makes me involuntarily slap myself in the head. I just can't help it. All I can think about is the huge mountain of shooters they could have drawn inspiration from. I start thinking about every great shooter of the last decade, and wonder how Sega can botch something so simple. At no point did Sega say "Wait a minute guys, western audiences aren't going to like this. They are used to having complete control of their shooting. Taking that away, even a little bit, is going to turn them off."
Nobody thought of this during the entire dev cycle? It would be like me making a JRPG that completely takes away the exploration, forces you to walk down hallways for the entire game, and streamlines the battle system so much it plays itself.......wait a minute....

Hey now...Vanquish and Armored Core say hello (and Vanquish was published by Sega, no less!). I'm also reading a lot of praise for Binary Domain, made by the developers of the Yakuza series....
I can't be sure what's going on with this here Dead Souls, though.
Ed - I agree. While I understand the logic of firearms being more effective against hordes of zombies, I can't help but think that if they had just spent more time on the shooting mechanics, this could have been a much better game.
Honestly, it seems like they were able to re-use a lot of the existing art and gameplay assets. I'm not sure why they couldn't have spent a little more time and ironed out the shooting. It seems to me like it was rushed out the door.
As it stands, it just ended up being frustrating and so very disappointing. Especially after I enjoyed previous installments so much.
I was a little leery on Yakuza jumping on the whole "zombie bandwagon" routine, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. The demo didn't seem that bad...and I was so wrong. I also felt the same pain you did, Jay.
I love the Yakuza series and it kills me to see this. I was bored a few hours in from shooting zombies, zombies, and even more zombies ad nauseum. At least Dead Rising tried to keep things interesting with do-it-yourself weapons, leading survivors back to safety, psychopaths, and the general goofiness of using anything as a weapon.
The controls didn't bother as me as much, but even as a third person shooter, I just couldn't get into it.
What is more depressing is that we get this instead of a port for Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan!. That needs to get over here for everyone to enjoy its awesomeness.
