Burning CrusadeTen years ago this week, Sony acquired Uncharted developer Naughty Dog, best known at the time for the Crash Bandicoot series. Maybe one day we'll finally get that Crash-Uncharted crossover game I had a weird dream about once.


January 16

2007: Blizzard releases The Burning Crusade, the first expansion for its blockbuster MMO World of Warcraft expansion. It sells 2.4 million copies its first day.

2008: Savage: The Battle for Newerth, a strange marriage of real-time strategy and first-person shooter mechanics, comes out on PC.

2009: Pandemic announces Lord of the Rings: Conquest as part of their slow descent into nonexistence.


January 17

2003: Sony debuts The Getaway in San Francisco, hailing it as the most ambitious video game ever made. Jump forward to 2011: You can pick up a copy of The Getaway and its sequel for under $10 total while games like Ico start at around $20.

2008: Codemasters unveils the lamentable Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust.

 

January 19

1983: Hikaru Utada is born. She is a Japanese pop singer known to American audiences best as the ethereal voice behind the Kingdom Hearts soundtrack.


January 20

1981: Development on the Commodore 64 begins after a group of technicians set out to improve upon the Vic-20.


January 21

1972: Chrono Trigger and Xenogears composer Yasunori Mitsuda is born. His music is featured in over 35 games.

1985: David Crane unveils the Ghostbusters game for the Commodore 64 on TV. And, as luck should have it, I have a handy video to prove it:


January 22

2001: Sony announces that they've acquired Crash Bandicoot developer Naughty Dog. It's really amazing to see how far they've come when you put the first Crash game next to Uncharted 2

I say looking at Way of the Warrior vs Uncharted.

But I've always thought the travels of Crash Bandicoot to be interesting. Starting out as a mascot for Sony then joining Microsoft.
