This Week in Video-Game History is all about GDC awards and announcements.

March 6

1996: Square Co. Ltd (now Square Enix) announces the opening of their Los Angeles, CA office.

2001: Ford Racing is released on the PlayStation 2. This series is tremendously popular in the southern U.S. No, seriously, it really is.

2003: Capcom launched a UK help line for customers too scared to play Resident Evil Zero -- quite possibly the least frightening title in the series next to Resident Evil: Dead Aim. The chat line allowed players to talk to a psychologist if their fears were too overwhelming.

March 7

1998: Nintendo launches Yoshi's Story in Lizard Lick, NC. The entire town was invited to a preview event complete with Yoshi-themed games and demo stations for kids to play.

2007: Shigeru Miyamoto receives a lifetime achievement award at the Game Developers Choice Awards. Miyamoto is the creator of some of gaming's most memorable titles (Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda).

March 8

2004: Rival Interactive announces that they acquired exclusive rights to make a game based off of the National Guard Homeland Defense and Counter Terrorism initiatives. The result was less than good.

March 9

1989: Cameron Robert Kocher tragically shot and killed his 7-year-old neighbor after a fight over a video game. This is one of the earliest crimes attributed to violence in gaming. Kocher was nearly 10 at the time of the shooting.

2005: Microsoft reveals the Xbox 360 at the Game Developers Conference (GDC).

2008: Super Smash Bros. Brawl hits the shelves. I worked a miserable midnight release for this. It was just as crazy as any Halo event you've ever seen.

March 10

1975: Ali Movasat is born in Tehran, Iran. He's more commonly known as DJ Aligator and has several songs featured in the Dance Dance Revolution series. Do you remember the Whistle Song?

2000: Bill Gates reveals the original Xbox at GDC. The announcement received many mixed reactions from the gaming world primarily because Microsoft was so entrenched in the PC market.

Wow! I did not know that about RE0! I tried replaying that recently for my piece on the series but simply couldn't do it! It might be the worst aged of all :-)

Yoshi's Story: A guilty pleasure.

The Smash Bros. Brawl midnight release was the only one around here that ever got crazy. I had to stand in line next to a guy who thought it was necessary to explain how "that's what she said" jokes work.
