I actually work in a casino, as an I.T. Director.  I have seen more than a few areas where crossover between our two groups of "gamers" is being targetted.  More than a few years ago we had a Pac-Man machine, the bonus round had you navigating a maze of ghosts and pellets.  Of course, being a game of chance, direct control and skill progression are both denied the player.  I know that I have seen a Shinobi machine around too.  Achievements in slots are a no-brainer.  I actually recently proposed that our casino add achievements to the marketing arm of its player's club.  I think the idea is a good one.

I remember playing the Star Trek slot last time I was in Vegas, and the machine had unlockable "chapters," and your progress through them could be "saved" by printing out a ticket to reinsert and continue later from where you left off.

In the final analysis, my opinion is that casino games (except for poker) have to remain games of chance and not skill, and thus will have limited appeal to the hardcore gamer set.  I wrote my own bitmob article pondering these connections a year or so ago here:

Well clearly I prefer haiku,

but I can do limmericks too!

I'll brainstorm one now

And thus show you how

I'm writing a new one for you:

There once was a hero named Cole

Who wondered if he had a soul.

He blasted some guys

And finally got wise

While climbing a telephone pole!

I had the same experience climbing the tower in Infamous.  The sense of height was dizzying.  I also think it had something to do with the mechanics.  You were expected to jump from rickety outcropping to dangling pipe and so forth, and even though the Sly Cooper-style "landing mechanics" ensured a landing for you (most of the time).  Yet the fact that those landing and gripping mechanics were so automated, so outside of direct control, heightened the sense of vertigo for me somehow.

It also helps this situation if you expand your local multiplayer definition to include local co-op.  I know that my son and I have definitely had some good times with New Super Mario Bros Wii and Earth Defense Force 2017, to name just a few.

@Michael yeah that seems a bit long.  Know what you mean about time-delay charges.  It's why I hate writing checks any more.  I'd maybe email 'em.

@Jordan I wish!  Tell 'em Dana sent ya though, as I have a job application in with them.  ;)

It's good to hear that.  This one was one of the hardest, to do justice with so few words.  Thanks.

Hey I can really respect this response.  I will say this industry has become so weirdly multi-layered that finding pundits who are spending their time criticizing the critics is too easy (something I now feel guilty of myself).  I may have leveled a couple of criticisms of Play in my response to your original article Frank, but I still stand by the positive things I said about how Play was a vital voice in a chorus of criticism.  It ain't a chorus if everyone's singing the same notes.  I somehow missed the original Gamefan.  At the time I was reading EGM and Next Gen I think.  But what the hey I'd love to check it out.

That said, the digital model like you're seeing in the new EGM has got to be part of the model moving forward.  Online is interactive in a community sense--that seems to be how it works best.  Print is great but no one can afford to lather newstands with copies in hopes of garnering subscribers anymore (not in this vast America of ours, anyway).  I think the digital print has got to be the hook to get enough subscribers (without giving it away and hoping for ads to pay the bills), so you can make high-quality paper print mags without newstand presence.  It's a working theory:  EGMi/Edge model kind of thing.

Dugg.  Good work Frank.  You'll find a preview of the first issue of the Gamefan on the Hardcore Gaming 101 blog here:

God I must be going crazy as I thought I read that Brady Fleitcher was on board with the new EGM but now that I pour through the press releases I see no sign of that news I must have imagined I read.
