3 Kanye West video-game ideas

Kanye on the MPC in RunawayHip-hop mega-star Kanye West apparently wants to start making video games.

The Watch the Throne rapper recently took to Twitter to tease about his new design company, DONDA. He wants to eventuallly expand it into "22 divisions, with a goal to make products and experiences that people want and can afford." West aspires to assemble great minds from a wide variety of fields which includes, naturally, video games.

The industry, however, is already filled with people trying to revolutionize how we play, so it'll be interesting to see what kind of impact, if any, his future crack team can make. I'm also quite curious to see what kind of talent he'll able to court.

And what sort of titles will they produce? Who knows -- but here are my ideas for places the DONDA games division can start.

1. Kanye West Beat Laboratory: Yeezy makes numerous references to Will Ferrell movies in his lyrics, so naming a game after a line from Step Brothers doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch. As for the gameplay, how about a rhythm game where the player recreates Mr. West’s hits on a sample-playing Akai MPC controller? I imagine it to be something like all of the other plastic-instrument games (Guitar Hero, etc.) but much more stylish. The developers could reference the Power performance in Kanye’s Runaway short film for inspiration.

Akai MPC 2000 XL

If they include a well-made custom controller from Akai and give players some creative control to produce and record their own music as well, this title would easily breathe life into the currently stale genre. The iPad 2, with its built-in mic and velocity-sensitive touch screen, is just begging for a killer app like this.

Plus, Ye’s favorite producers, like Q-Tip, Pete Rock, and RZA, could make cameo appearances with their own beats. Add a handful of original tracks, and a game like this is going platinum, easily. Hell, I already like the sound of it way more than DJ Hero.

2. Untitled fashion-industry simulator: In Kanye’s Twitter rant, he revealed how he’s been studying fashion for the past eight years. He’s worked with and interned at companies like Louis Vuitton and Fendi, paid for his own fashion show out of pocket, and has a small studio in Paris where he designs clothes. This whole story of a novice outsider trying to crack into a notoriously ruthless industry could make an excellent simulator game. Besides, I think that sub-genre has for too long been dominated by casual titles like Imagine: Fashion Designer for the Nintendo DS.

3. Welcome to Universe City: Have you seen the music video for Kanye's "Good Morning"? It’s a psychedelic trip through a world designed by famous Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. The developer of a game based on this video could simply translate the multicolor mushrooms and cutesy animal characters into a 3D platformer, and already they’d have a solid foundation for something aesthetically fresh.

Players would assume the role of the Kanye West bear (a prevalent motif throughout the rapper’s first three albums) as he makes his way to the graduation ceremony to receive his Bachelor of Hip-Hop Music degree. On the way, he’ll have to navigate a flying DeLorean through chaotic urban traffic, survive the tornado-plagued stomach of a hungry cloud, and score the winning touchdown in football game between vicious gorillas and kangaroos.

Well, whatever Kanye’s DONDA ends up developing, I hope, as a fan, that it’s good. If it’s anything like the musician’s tour shows, expect the production values to be a bit over the top but in a well-designed way.

Oh, you know I'd play the hell out of Welcome to Universe City. Those Murakami characters are freaking awesome.

I would love something like a Murakami Rez/El Shaddai game, personally.
