Flash games are a lot of fun. They can be simple, or they can be complicated. With the computer you have a whole keyboard and a mouse to play with within a flash game. So when you tell someone about SemiSercret's "Canabalt" one button gameplay, you may get a crinkled face or semi disgusted look. To most, simple gameplay has a hard time equaling good gameplay.
The indie flash game turned downloadable iPhone game "Canabalt" shatters this sterotype, giving you a wonderfully replayable and lasting game. One tap of your finger brings you into a high speed rooftop chase similar to that of the opening scene of The Matrix. That same tap of the screen brings you to a War of The Worlds (the orignal, not that Tom Cruise bull) planet under attack, leaving you wide-eyed and shocked at the destruction way off in the distance. All of this in one 8 bit-esque 2D sidescrolling game. "Canabalt" may be simple but the enviorment, sound and overall ambiance is anything but simple, and is very well done for a flash or iPhone game.
Whether you blaze through the game like DC comic's Flash or take it slow and steady like a Ninja Turtle, "Canabalt" is a trip. Though the $2.99 price tag in the iPhone's Application store is a little hard to swallow for the exact same content you can find in the flash version, the developers have promised some leaderboard functionality in the future and possibly some new levels. So why not support some great indie developers now?
