(Discussion Topic) Developers and the DLC

Thursday, August 20, 2009

Today an interesting point was made by David. The point was why do developers release DLC so quickly now. Really I got to thinking about it and they come out with it sooner now then years past.

I know we are not the only ones that think this. Then again why do gamers want to know about DLC even before the game is released? Does DLC and what it may be effect the way you purchase games?

For me DLC does not affect the way I purchase. When I do talk to developers yes I ask, but it is more to see if they will be supporting there game months after release. So as gamers what are your thoughts on the subject.

I like DLC that they make as add-on to improve old games. But when we know about them as the game comes out, it might as well have been on the game already.

What annoys me about DLC is that a lot of this stuff used to be free (in the PC realm) -- like character costumes and map packs. I have hundreds of Starcraft and Doom maps that were distributed for free, but these days developers like to charge upwards of $10 for two measly maps.

I was thinking about writing about DLC (and its failure IMO) as my first piece. I'll give you a bit of a taste I guess.

Back in the good ol' days (Original Xbox Live), DLC was very rare, and when it did come out, came out months after the game was release. I remember downloading those halo maps and those phantom dust card expansions. DLC was always a very exciting thing to me and my friends. It always brought new life to the game, brought some replay value and created some good times.

Naturally, I was excited to hear that DLC would be further developed on the xbox 360. I began to think of games that were 1 or 2 years old still getting quality DLC! How wrong I was...

Horse Armor! Uniforms and old stadiums for Madden games! Suff already on the disc! Even whole characters (Darth Vader and Yoda in SC4)! Its madness!

DLC should be created with the same care that the main game was. It should be released well after the gamers have gone through every nook and cranny of the game. DLC loses its punch when you're still playing through and unlocking things from the main game. Imagine if rare released like 4 new areas for kameo right now. It would have the most affect since everyone has been there done that.

Developers have really missed the point of DLC I think. Instead of expanding the experience, they are merely more tools to nickel and dime us. The worst thing is, we all buy it...

DLC, one of my biggest dissappointments of this console generation.

I hope my comment didn't kill the discussion. if you like the way DLC is done, speak up!

How would YOU do DLC if you don't like how it is done today?

@David I think right now the only two companies who are getting DLC right is Bungie and the Makers of Burnout Paradise. That is how I would do it at least :)

Damn, now if I disagree I dont look like a great mind!

I like the way DLC is done with Fallout 3 of GTA4. They have the model right... Big chunk as opposed to horse armor...

I do think Fat Princess NEEDS NEW CHARACTERS!!!! THAT GAME IS GETTING BORING! >:(

@lance I disagree as I don't like the model Fallout 3 & GTA was handled compared to Burnout & Halo 3. :P

How ever maybe there is a difference between shooter games compared to other genre's we are not exploring into.

@Toby - Well now you are just disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing!!!! Halo 3 and Fallout 3 have a very similar model!!!:P Large chunks!

This is a bunch of hornballs! ;D

@Lance I am not doing it for the sake of it, but Really halo 3 and Fallout 3 have different ways they have done there DLC. :) As fans actually got to participate in the DLC for halo 3 as Fallout 3 was only by Developer.

In a way also Fallout 3 only promoted to play the game at hand and stopped people from leveling up as the fans wanted a higher level cap. Again the Developer did not listen to fans. How ever halo 3 did listen and implemented more aspects for fans.

how ever you can buy the Fallout 3 DLC codes at stores, but need internet to Download them. As halo 3 DLC you can only find on the market place.

so in saying this i think both implemented these DLC's in different ways from each other. The only thing that is the same maybe the size of the file. :P

@Toby -

Fallout 3's latest DLC's DO raise the level cap and they are available in stores ON A DISC!!! Halo 3 will also have some of the DLC on a disc as well when ODST comes out. Burnout has the best free DLC, and some good stuff that is cheap, but it is not on a disc! GTA's DLC will come out on a disc as well. And all four of those games release their stuff in large chunks!

I am very confused :o

Okay, I am awake! And I still don't agree! ;D

But the new Fat Princess classes look cool!

@Lance You got me. I just know you hate to wake up in the morning and Logic is the first thing you hate to do in the mornings. But one thing you like to do is be right. So all I have to do is find a way to get you to think about what you are saying and now your awake and ready for the day.

How ever on that note I don't think Team Fortress 2 will ever get any DLC in a timely manner cause they have been lazy with it. I want more then what i just got or at least another announcement of something will happen down the road before i pick up the PS3 version.

@Toby - I see your point about TF2. I have heard a rumor in one of the TF2 podcasts - I wont say which one, but the GOOD one - that the 360 may get a real update, and what really bothers me is that the PS3 TF2 community is dedicated, talented and there are clans, tournaments and awesome Pyros who can even take down a heavy/soldier/medic team - Its true, I have done it. But those damn demomen are the bane of my existence.

So, what do YOU think of the new Fat Princess classes?

Hi guys! Okay everyone remembers Baldurs Gate 2 or any older game that got a significant "expansion pack"? That's one side of the cookie, I'll pay for that(if they let me Fallout 3!). Anything that follows the model of "horse armor" such as Darth vader/Yoda, Two dollar Disgaea 3/Little Big Planet characters, or simple map packs using the graphics ALREADY in the game can go straight to hell. I won't buy shit like that, but the sad truth is it must sell very well because it comprises about half of the playstation store. It is probably the same for Live. My point is this trend is going to continue until people stop being willing to pay out the ear for tiny "additions" to their game. Which I don't see any time soon.......

tiny "additions"

Damn straight, Tommy! I want big chucks of fudge!

And Valve - I will pay $10 for a TF2 update on PS3.....

I guess the ninja will be faster than the worker, which may weigh in on my class decision.
