Do You use the Word 'Noob'? ...Really!?! ...Why?

The other day I posted a relatively mild comment on Kotaku.com about the PSP. The first comment I got back was someone calling me a 'noob.' Now, I might not be huge on what is cool in the nerd vernacular right now, but isn't the word 'noob' meant as a pejorative for people who play games like they are new to gaming? Is the word 'noob' really becoming an all-purpose slang word meant to put somebody down?

I mean, it is definitely a better word for the legion of Xbox Live putzes to use than 'fag' or 'homo' ... but it also seems like a very bizarre word to get such a negative connotation from the Cro-Magnon hoard of drool-covered, Cheeto-encrusted dipshits that populate the gaming universe.

Noob Shouldn't we, as gamers, want to welcome new players into the gaming fold?

Now, I do understand that having someone who isn't great at a game online who refuses to play with people of their own skill level can be an annoyance... but aren't most games making it so that you end up playing with someone ranked similar to your own skill level?

Why do you think 'noob' is getting to be such a prominent word used to bash someone in the gaming world?

Do you use and like the word 'noob,' and think I am an asshole for even bringing the subject up?

If you have any thoughts on this, please post some comments here.

I think it has something to do with the "I ran the gauntlet and so shall you" mentality, for the most part I believe it's that when people start a game they get called "noobs" a lot, ergo, when they are skilled they feel it is their right to call players less skilled then them "noobs". If I had to place my finger on the root, it would be basic human desire for competition, primal nature and all, just my two cents.

Well, at least nobodies using seventies vernacular anymore, right? I think "fag" as a synonym for asshole upsets me far worse as misuse of the English language.(That does NOT mean that I accept "noob" as a word.) Scary story: I was watching my little brother play WOW a couple of weeks ago and his raid buddies were saying the acronym lol out loud in lieu of actually laughing. Weird shit.

@Tommy I agree, while it could be much worse, it is true that in comparison to other derogatory terms used online, such as the "Fa" word, "noob" is not as bad. Though some of these phrases scare me a bit when they get too close to the "Newspeak" mark.

"Sensors indicate noob." That's hilarious! The word has transformed into a four letter word, I've heard 'noob' being used outside of internet language too. It's slowly becoming a normal vocab word.

It's my license plate! I don't think it's too terribly unnerving. It's grown to mean "lesser than myself" just as "gay" and "retarded" have had their popular connotations appropriated into different categories.

I come from a place where the word noob runs rampant. Not mentioning any names *cough* WoW *cough*, Has a lot of players that are very good at using the word noob, but not at playing the game. On the server(One of the originals from release) That i have called home for 5 years, I have noticed something else, Usually the older the player the less they call someone a noob. The "Noob Crowd" as i call them usually are ages 13-20ish and half the times have the social skills of a rock buried under 10 tons of mud in the deepest parts of the dark ocean. The reason it comes about is pressure for one part/the other is disrespect. Frankly i don't like using the word noob, EVERYONE was new once! When i started on wow (feels like ages ago) I spent a month in Elwynn Forest my gear sucked i was 5 levels to high for the place, but it was new and exciting to explore. I asked questions people answered etc. Around the time of burning crusade (it was about this time that my "RP" server transitioned to just a majorly pve server)I noticed the noob comment being told to people and the rudeness to new players. NOOB- everyone that has began a game.

Yeah, you have just touched on one of the aspects of the use of this word that drive me crazy- it is mostly prepubescent kids using it. It makes me feel prematurely old because I want to yell "Back in my day we were all Noobs... because games has never existed before you little twerp." I don't though... because then they would just make fun of me for being an old fart. It also doesn't help that at the time they are usually kicking my ass at Modern Warfare 2. I just hope some of em get Perfect Dark XBLA... then I will show them the true meaning of the word Noob!

from observing my little bro, here's the rundown Noob = "SCrEWZ YOU NOOB, I SEE YOU HAX!" Insult Newb = "Lol someone help that guy up, he's just a newb." Newbie
