Square Enix kicks off another decade of repackaging old games with their announcement of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy 2 for the iPhone. What does this mean for you?

Touch screen d-pads....

No price or date has been set, but one has to wonder if the games are still worth re-releasing after the stellar 20th Anniversary editions hit the PSP a few years back. Collectively, this marks their 7th release, including their original launches and various compilations. It's time to give up the ghost, Square Enix. I already own both games three times over in varying degrees of playability. [via Square Enix]

My theory is that Square-Enix is trying to get into the Guinness book of World Records with most number of ports of a video game. That's the only logical justification.

I don't know why people whine about companies like Square-Enix and Capcom re-releasing games on different platforms over the years. I know that a lot of games I missed out on I've had the chance to play because of ports and re-releases. If you already have the game great, but it is a great opportunity for the younger gamers or gamers that did not have the consoles in the previous releases.

@David, good points. My main complaint is if you bought an earlier port, it's frustrating when marginally better versions keep coming out. Plus, there are a bunch of amazing Final Fantasy games, so personally I think it's lame that only the first two games are ported extensively.

@David @Alejandro Companies can continue to port games all they want. If it helps expose a new group of people to something good, the entire hobby benefits from it.

Sure, that's a lot of ports, but if we don't continue at this rate, how am I ever going to play Final Fantasy 1 on my toaster? Seriously, though, I agree with Alejandro; they can port as much as they want if it helps their business, but it would be nice if they ported a few more of the later titles.

I complain about all this porting, but in the end I'll probably have FF 1 on my phone. It never fails. I will repeatedly purchase that game like it's something I just have to do. Standing in line, stranded without my DS or PSP but I really want to grind. Oh, look, that Final Fantasy games is oh so easy to purchase.... then I hate myself for the rest of the day.

I have yet to own either of these games despite the fact they have been remade for just about everything more powerful than a calculator, so I think this will be a good (CHEAP!) opportunity to finally play a part of gaming history. My only hope is they work out a viable save system, considering it is an iPhone and all.

Final Fantasy I on GBA was the last time I bought the game. Can't ever imagine myself shelling out cash for the PSP version, much less the iPhone version. But maybe this is a good thing for people and younger gamers who never played the first one, right?

The only version of FF 1 I've played is the Origins version back when I borrowed it from a friend of mine in 04..or 05.I have yet to play any other version, but I'd go with the one with the most content in it would be be the PSP version long with FF 2,just because. But yes,it's sad to see the same gaming content being re-re-released while other more niche titles sit to the wayside. Capcom, who is probably the most known perpetrator for doing this,is trying to pick up the ball and are releasing some older titles that most people growing up and in this point in time have not played, such as the Bionic Commando Re-armed and the recently announced Final Fight/Magic Sword compilation.More companies should take note of this some that older games that no one has played, seen,or heard of in ages can have the opportunity to experience...namely the whole back catalog of the Enix games that came out on the Super Nintendo.I want to play some Illusion of Gaia dammit!

If it plays well, I'll happily put this on my iPhone. As long as it doesn't play like Mega Man 2...that still makes me so sad..
